mono US (3) 78rpm Album deep groove pressing
featuring rare uncredited wonderful illustrated cover art 
by David Stone Martin and contains some great Jazz
alternating between Solo Piano sides by Erroll Garner and
trio sides by Billy Kyle with John Kirby & Jimmy Shirley

we believe this set was also released by Asch Records
who also released an Art Tatum 78 Album set with very
similar David Stone Martin artwork & while the artwork for
the set we are offering is uncredited, it is almost certainly
his work, and is also very similar to the DSM cover art 
for an Art Tatum Asch Records 10" 78 rpm Album Set
that was released at around the same time period

~ condition ~


records are in Excellent - Condition and have all
been fully play tested & they sound great with just typical
78rpm surface noise without any skips, repeats or bad noise
and the records are shiny & clean with some light wear
in addition to one side having a small edge chip that does
not in any way interfere with the sound & the records all
have shiny clean labels with some spindle wear

cover (album) is in Fairly Good Condition with bold
bright printing & has no writing or markings but does
have some light rubbing to the front cover & while the spine
is mostly all-there it does have considerable separation at
the seams which could likely be repaired if desired & the
album also has corner & edgewear plus the attached sleeves
inside the album are worn through the outer edge at the
centers but are otherwise still intact and hold the records
securely & overall the David Stone Martin cover artwork
displays nicely even with the wear around the edges

~ David Stone Martin ~


illustrator David Stone Martin was one of the most prolific
and influential graphic designers of the postwar era, creating
over 400 mostly Jazz Lp Covers with a hand-drawn style that
perfectly captured the energy & spontaneity of the  idiom. He
was from Chicago & studied at the Art Institute of Chicago
and began his career assisting social realist painter Ben Shahn
designing murals for the 1933 World's Fair & then became the
TVA art director & also worked as an artist for Life Magazine
during WW II until later entering the music biz through his
longtime friendship with Norman Granz designing covers for
his Verve & Down Home & Norgran Clef  record labels as well as
hundreds of other album covers and is the most famous and
collected artist of all jazz era and his work has exhibited at
Metropolitan Museum of Art and at MOMA in New York


~ Erroll Garner ~


Erroll Garner was one of the most distinctive of all
pianists & proved it was possible to be a sophisticated
player without knowing how to read music. He was a
brilliant virtuoso who sounded unlike anyone else often
stating the beat with his left hand like a rhythm guitar while
his right played chords slightly behind the beat & his playful
free-form introductions forced his sidemen to really listen
and while Garner got his start in New York in 1944 working
with Slam Stewart, he was soon out on his own and is known
for backing Charlie Parker on his famous Cool Blues session
in '47. His unclassifiable style had an orchestral approach
straight from the swing era but was open to bop


~ Billy Kyle ~


a fluent pianist with a light touch, Billy Kyle never
achieved much fame, but he always worked steadily
beginning his career when he was just 18 playing with
Tiny Bradshaw and Lucky Millinder and then became an
important part of the John Kirby Sextet (1938-1942) which
was a perfect vehicle for his style. After a three year stint
in the military (1942-1945) Kyle working fairly often with
Sy Oliver and then joined Louis Armstrong's All-Stars in '53
where he remained for nearly 13 years until his death and it
is unfortunate that Billy Kyle had very few opportunities to
record as a leader and none during his Armstrong years
(just some octet & septet sides in 1937, two songs with
a  quartet in 1939, and outings in 1946 with a trio
and an octet) totaling just 17 songs in all
