Ultra Rare Private Press single by John Compton, Robin Batteau, David Reiser recorded prior to the formation and recording of Appaloosa for Columbia Records.
In a interview with NIck Warburton in 2009 Compton makes reference to this single:
Prior to recording our “Appaloosa” LP, Robin and I recorded two of my songs, “Rosalie” and “Downtown Row” at Intermedia Sound in Boston. It was a beautiful studio. We asked David to play Fender bass for the session. David was only 16 but a real pro bassist and played with several bands at many of Boston’s jazz clubs. The recording session went so well that the owner of the studio offered to print us a hundred 45s. I remember that we got them added to some jukeboxes at various locations around town.
This is one of those rare 45's only released in Boston featuring a stripped down version of "Rosalie" and "Downtown Row" very much encompassing Compton's folk baroque sound in it's early days.
Signed to Columbia Records at the age of 19, John Parker Compton and his acoustic band Appaloosa, co-founded with violinist extraordinaire Robin Batteau burst upon the music scene with their self-titled LP. Produced by legendary musician-producer Al Kooper the recording is still sought out 30 years later by adoring fans around the world. German music magazine Oldie-Markt calls this recording "...one of the most exceptional records in the broad area of Folk and Rock.
Compton would later go one to form Compton & Batteau and release In California in 1970 on Columbia. Compton released his folk psych masterpiece To Luna in 1973 which is still highly sought after and commands hundreds of dollars. This is a rare piece of the Boston Mass. folk rock scene.
