Description
My Favorite Things is a studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane. It was released on the Atlantic Records label in March 1961. It was the first album to feature Coltrane playing soprano saxophone. An edited version of the title track became a hit single that gained popularity in 1961 on the radio. After being gifted a soprano saxophone by Miles Davis. After leaving Davis in the summer of 1960 Coltrane assembled the first version of the John Coltrane Quartet. The lineup features McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. The quartet’s version of the Rodger’s and Hammerstein song from Sound Of Music transformed the populist song into a hypnotic Eastern dervish dance that quickly became Trane’s most requested tune and a bridge to broad public acceptance. The album is also notable for the rendition of Gershwin’s “But Not For Me”. The album has been certified Gold by the RIAA and received the Grammy Hall of Fame award in 1998.
