Description
This is the iconic original 1965 US release of John Coltrane’s trailblazing ‘A Love Supreme’ vinyl LP on Impulse Records, catalogue number AS-77, matrix runouts Stereo AS-77 A Van Gelder/Stereo As-77-B Van Gelder.
For track listings, see enlarged record label photos.
The high-gloss laminated gatefold cover is in VG+ condition, there is almost imperceptible ring wear on the rear of the cover, none on the front and some slight foxing top and bottom on the gatefold inner. The first photo is the front cover, the photo after the centre labels shots is the rear cover, though they are almost identical.
It comes with the original Impulse paper inner sleeve though this has small splits on each side and the record has always been kept in a vinyl-lined anti-static inner sleeve.
I have graded the record as VG+. There are a few surface marks. I would have graded it as excellent but there are three faint clicks in the first few seconds of side one and some slight audible noise at one stage in the bass solo.
The photos here are photos of the actual item you are bidding on, not stock photos. You can see, from the centre label shots, how little spindle wear or damage there is, which gives some indication of how carefully this record has always been treated. It is in surprisingly good condition for a record that is almost fifty years old!
This is a very rare and a very collectible record. I am starting it at a relatively low price to give everyone who might be interested a chance of bidding. If anyone wants more information, I will happily provide photos of details of the cover, the gatefold or the inner sleeve and I have digitalised some MP3s from sections of the record to give a better idea of condition. Send me a private email address via eBay messages and I will provide these. I am only too happy to answer any other questions you might have.
I am not a record dealer. Over the next few weeks I am selling off my collection of some two hundred albums, mainly from the 1960s and 1970s (see my other items). These have been stored with care and unplayed over the past twenty years. Before this most were played only on a Linn LP12 deck and carefully handled. None of them are mint (it was a working record collection) but most are in extremely good condition. Many were bought as the albums were released and so are first pressings. I have tried to use the guide to condition in Record Collector as a guide to my descriptions of condition and am also providing other information such as matrix numbers wherever possible. I am also posting a number of photos of each album. If anyone buys an album and feels it has not been accurately described, I will happily refund as long as the record is returned to me promptly in the condition that it left here.
I will post the album out, in the appropriate size of high end record mailer, as supplied by Covers 33, within two working days of receiving cleared funds via Paypal. As this is a valuable record, I will only send it abroad via Royal Mail International Signed For. For a sale within the UK I will send it out via Royal Mail First Class Signed For, unless the sale price exceeds £50, in which case it will go out Royal Mail Special Delivery.
Unfortunately I can’t get my postage costs as low as some of the other people who are selling on here as I live in a remote rural area and it’s a twenty mile round trip to the Post Office, but I can combine postage for records bought within a ten day period. Any combined postage outside the UK will be done as International Signed For. Contact me via eBay messages for full details.
Happy bidding!
