MID 60'S REPRESS
John Coltrane Plays for Lovers (1966) deserves to be considered apart from the reams of other Coltrane repackaged thematic compilations. Included are nearly 40 minutes of examples that acknowledge his remarkable capacity for naturally exquisite balladry. Considering this disc was initially issued just prior to 'Trane's death -- when the artist was primarily known for his leanings toward free jazz -- these half-dozen selections provide evidence of his tremendous facility and musical sensitivity. The contents were cherry-picked out of several different Coltrane sessions circa the Prestige era ( 1956-1958). "On a Misty Night" is from a late November of 1956. The affable melody is nothing short of a dreamy invocation unto itself. "Violets for Your Furs" is the pinnacle of a May 1957 quartet featuring Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Albert "Tootie" Heath (drums). The languid tempo allows the participants to infuse every measure with a refined sense of romanticism. Both "Like Someone in Love" and "I Love You" hail from a mid-August of 1957 meeting with 'Trane leading a trio of Earl May (bass) and Art Taylor (drums). The lack of keyboard support allowed Coltrane to unleash longer and more inclusive solos. Particularly enticing are the lusty syncopated rhythms on the latter. They similarly suit the three-piece lineup as they have the capacity to quickly fluctuate between a hypnotic Eastern flavor to straight-ahead bop. On "You Leave Me Breathless" Coltrane oozes emotive warmth. "Time After Time" was among the songs at Coltrane's final Prestige outing on December 26, 1958 Immediately evident is the increased fluidity in Coltrane's contributions that go far beyond a rote recitation. One can practically hear the harmonic advancements in his singular, melody-driven playing. For anyone who is even nominally curious about Coltrane, or simply wants an excellent anthology of the man at his most alluring, John Coltrane Plays for Lovers pretty much says it all.

THE JACKET- IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION - IN SHRINKWRAP IT SHOWS NO SPLITS OR PRICE NAME LABELS TO JACKET - NO NAMES - LIGHT BUMPING TO CORNERS SPINE IS VERY READABLE WITH SMALL CORNER BUMPING (SEE PHOTOS)
THE LABELS ARE IN EXCELLENT SHAPE WITH NO SPINDLE MARKINGS

Some incredible songs on this 1967 album from composer Reid King who married the Brazilian sound with
popular music of that era to produce an album that should have really taken off then, but due to the strange
setup of Canterbury Records who were in business to lose money for a Mattel tax shelter, the album was allowed
to die on the vine by Canterbury when it started to take off with airplay and sales. Reid King went on to become
one of the foremost composers of contemporary music for the gut-string guitar.
FINALLY ONE LAST WORD RE HAIRLINES, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ANY NON SEALED RECORD WITHOUT THEM, MANY HAD THEM FROM NEW. MOSTLY THEY ARE A RESULT OF STORAGE AND USE AND USUALLY HAVE LITTLE IMPACT ON THE SOUND QUALITY. THE SAME GOES FOR BACKGROUND NOISE, UNFORTUNATELY ALL RECORDS WILL HAVE SOME AND THIS VARIES AND REFLECTS THE PRESSING QUALITY.
Most records have production marks where someone touched or moved the vinyl while it was still semi-soft. These marks look like smudges, but are not scratches or "paper scuffs" and do not usually sound. Untouched vinyl from newly-opened records have these marks.

Near Mint - Looks rarely played, very shiny with no visible marks
Excellent to Excellent Plus - A disc is super clean, with only very light visible marks that do not hamper play
Excellent minus is a disc that is excellent except it may have some markings that do not show up in the playing
VG+ AND VG++ - A Disc that is still in good shape, but will have some hairlines and minor superficial scratches with none deep that will not hamper play
VG A Disc that has minor scratches, some can be felt with a fingernail and can be heard as surface noise but nothing to spoil the overall enjoyment play
VG Minus - A record that has been well enjoyed, Still playable with minor imperfections such as light scratches, visible scuffing etc.
