Privately pressed box set from 1980 with 3 white vinyl lps, produced in a limited edition of 1000 as a special supplement to the Vision art journal. This spoken word recording documents an artists' retreat that took place on a remote Pacific island, with talks prepared by the 12 participating artists. Tracks range from stories to theoretical tracts to poetry to experimental ramblings to ambient island sounds, from the serious to the absurd, reflecting the widely varying backgrounds of the artists (experimental video and film, performance and installation art, music, painting, collage, etc.); each artist gets roughly 12 minutes. Includes booklet with extensive photos. This lp is listed in the Broken Music catalog of artists' record works.
Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). Laurie Anderson is an avant garde multimedia performance artist who has worked with Philip Glass, William S Burroughs, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, and Lou Reed.
