Description

Tapesongs-- Joan La Barbara: Cathing (1977); Thunder (1976) / John Cage: Solo For Voice 45 (1971). Chiaroscuro CR 196

Rare 1977 lp with 3 works performed by La Barbara combining wild experimental vocals with electronics and magnetic tape. Cage's Solo For Voice uses chance methods to derive pitches from star maps; La Barbara created a tape collage of her performance by simultaneously layering 16 different panned tracks, one for each of the composition's parts. La Barbara's piece Cathing cuts up and electronically alters pieces of a recorded interview with a singer, and brings in several tracks of La Barbara's own microtuned singing of "split tones, glissandos, high flutters, and various kinds of vocal percussion". Thunder attempts to suggest the sound-world of a thunderstorm, and features La Barbara electronically processing her own voice along with the tympani playing of Warren Smith and Bruce Ditmas. An amusing acrostic poem by Cage about La Barbara is printed on the back.

La Barbara is an experimental vocalist who studied under Helen Boatwright and is married to Morton Subotnick; she has worked with David Tudor, Phill Niblock, Robert Ashley, John Cage, Steve Reich, Jim Hall, Don Sebesky, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Merce Cunningham, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass, Kenneth Goldsmith, Judy Chicago, Lita Albuquerque, and James Tenney, and provided vocal sound effects for the Alien movies. Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, collaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). References: Kenneth Gaburo, Luciano Berio, Cathy Berberian, Kurt Schwitters, Tristan Tzara, Mauricio Kagel, Pierre Henry, Diamanda Galas, Brion Gysin, Meredith Monk, Charles Amirkhanian, Henri Chopin, Miriam Burton, Yma Sumac, Vox Humana, etc.
