Long After Tonight Is All Over b/w What I Want I Can Never Have

Stateside SS 374, 1964.

 

We’re having a bit of a clearout of stuff at home so I’ve put my usual eBay sales of art and ephemera mostly to one side for a few weeks. I’ve got a large personal collection of vinyl, lots of which I don’t play any more, so one of the things I will be selling is records. During the 1960s, Jimmy Radcliffe (1936 – 1973) was a jobbing New York-based session singer and backing vocalist. He also worked as a song-writer and record producer. In these various capacities he worked on numerous well known soul and R&B hits of the period. He also made a small number of recordings under his own name, mostly for the Musicor label. None of these records had any real success in the USA.

 

One of his Musicor recordings however was released under licence in the UK by the Stateside label. This recording was Long After Tonight Is All Over (originally Musicor MU1042), written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It was a modest hit, reaching number 40 in the British charts. Jimmy Radcliffe made a number of public appearances in the UK on the back of it.

 

Long After Tonight Is All Over turned to be Jimmy Radcliffe’s only successful record anywhere and  would have been long forgotten by now, except that it became – and remains – a classic on the Northern Soul scene.

 

This is an original 1964 copy of the the Stateside release. It has a fair sprinkling of faint surface marks but it has no serious damage and plays very cleanly on both sides. It sounds fine. The labels are nice bright condition as you can see. The record still has its original sleeve which is in good condition apart from being very slightly tatty and a little faded to one edge.
