This set presents the surviving outtakes and alternate mixes from the recordings that form Axis: Bold As Love, the second Jimi Hendrix Experience album, released in the UK on December 1st 1967. Following their explosive debut, Are You Experienced, Axis offered a more melodic, lyrical and psychedelic counterpoint, clearly indicating that Hendrix was more musician than wildman. The outtakes offered here are combined with slightly later recordings, which – although in the same vein – indicate where the Experience was headed.
It’s well documented that Hendrix managed to leave the original mixes for side one of Axis in a London cab, requiring a subsequent, frantic remix of the first seven tracks (his personal mixes of a number of Axis tracks were sold at Sotheby's in London in 1981). This set offers the opportunity to ponder how Axis might have sounded if different decisions had been made by Hendrix and producer Chas Chandler when selecting the final mixes. These alternative versions shed light on the creative process, and highlight just how different two takes of the same song can be. Spanish Castle Magic, for example, utilizes a piano – not the most common instrument on rock albums in 1967. Some tracks feature completely different vocal takes, while on others it’s easy to see how the band experimented with newly available sonic effects.
A number of songs recorded during the Axis sessions were ultimately not used. Of these, only The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice saw a release of any sort in Jimi's lifetime (as the B-side of Burning Of The Midnight Lamp). Takin' Care Of No Business appears twice, the second version offering overdubs added by Chandler in 1988, when he was preparing a release of unheard Experience material (a project that was never completed). Cat Talkin' To Me, meanwhile, offers a very rare opportunity to hear Mitch Mitchell on lead vocal – not quite as impressive as his consummate drumming.
The remaining tracks on disc two were mainly recorded in London, though the shift towards New York had begun in the months that followed the album’s release. They show the band stretching out and adopting the jazzy feel that culminated in 1968's Electric Ladyland. Dream and Dance offer Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell further opportunity to demonstrate their compositional skills, while the loose Little One is alleged to feature Brian Jones on sitar (later on this album you can hear Hendrix play sitar on Cherokee Mist). The familiar Albert Collins instrumental Driving South leads us into two tracks that reiterate the improvisational route the band was beginning to take on longer pieces – a trend that would become a feature of their live performances in 1968 and 1969. Closing this set, Three Little Bears and the ensuing improvisation give evidence of the blinkered attitude employed in the compilation of the severely edited War Heroes album. Please enjoy these recordings as history that might have been, works in progress and a vision of the future in equal measure.
