Description
This is the 12LP (one double) box set released in 1980 which contains the main Hendrix album releases plus a number of rarities that are hard to find elsewhere along with a booklet with a short biog of Hendrix, photos, and a full track listing of all the included LPs. See the individual gradings below for a list of the included LPs. The full track listing is printed on the back of the box which can be seen in one of the photographs.
I've owned this box set for about 24 years (bought second hand) and played (Rega P3/RB300/Elys) and enjoyed all the records in the past, but none of them have been played in the last 13 years. It includes all 12 LPs (including the double LP 'Electric Ladyland') with the gold lettered stamp 'Limited edition Box Set' on the sleeves plus the original booklet.
As to condition, the box itself is in fair condition. It is structurally sound apart from one corner where about 5cm of the rear panel has separated from the bottom panel but has some marks and places where the glossy surface layer has come away from the card beneath. Please view the photos and judge the condition of the box for yourself. The records themselves are in much better condition. They have been kept in Nagaoka No. 102 anti-static sleeves (the best I have found for preventing the dust build-up that plagues vinyl records) for as long as I have owned the box and have been handled with care - only held by their edges, not the playing surfaces. The photo of Electric Ladyland side B is representative of the appearance of all the records. The booklet is in excellent condition.
Here are individual grades (sleeve first) for each of the records using the Record Collector grading scheme (reproduced below):
- Are You Experienced - VG/EX
- Axis Bold as Love - VG/EX
- Electric Ladyland - VG/EX
- Band of Gypsys - VG+/EX
- Isle of Wight - VG+/EX
- The Cry of Love - VG+/EX
- In the West - VG+/VG
Scratch on side 1 which extends intermittently through the second half of track 2 (Lover Man) and the first half of track 4 (Voodoo Chile). In both cases it looks like a dashed line marked on the record and I would expect it to be audible intermittently in both cases. - War Heroes - VG+/VG
One or two light surface marks and some surface imperfections which look like tiny (about a millimetre) circular dimples. These latter marks look to me like pressing faults rather than damage. - Loose Ends - VG+/VG
A small number of surface marks similar to War Heroes above. - Midnight Lightning - EX/VG
Two faint scratches on side 2 that start over the end of track 1 (Blue Suede Shoes) and extend throughout track 2 (Machine Gun). - Crash Landing - VG+/EX
- Nine to the Universe - VG/VG
Three small parallel scratches close together on the lead in and the first half a millimetre or so of the playing surface of side 1 and a faint scratch throughout the first two-thirds of track 2, side 1 (Jimi Jam).
Please note that all gradings are visual only.
Record Collector grading scheme:
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
