Description

A ploughman’s lunch with wilted lettuce and Branston pickle. A pint of warm hand knitted bitter, the aroma of damp tweed plus fours. Ginger beards, flutes, Wurzel Gummage and Catweazel. Not a few of my favourite things, but what springs to mind at the words Jethro Tull. They ploughed a lonesome furrow – or more precisely – drilled a solitary seed bed. The flute was never the natural instrument of choice for rock, Focus not withstanding, but Ian Anderson could do it standing on one leg. There is something Pythonesque about them – the broadsheet newspaper sleeve of Thick as a Brick could have been a product of Python, and the names of the band members has something wilfully eccentric – surely Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond should be the keyboard player? But regardless of all that the primary concern of bands in the late sixties/early seventies was quality music. Tull seemed at home both in the studio and on stage. This trio of albums offers both environments.

 

The sleeves are good, no tears or creases. There is some wear to the edges but the textured surface of Aqualung is very good. Thick as a Brick is complete with no tears – but has discoloured a little due to its format, but even the lower fold is reasonably crisp. The disks are flat and black and visibly good with no obvious issues. The Matrices are given with the track listing below. Not that living in the past comes with a program for the live date at Empire Pool Wembley Sat 22nd and Sun 23rd June in I think ’74.
