Columbia/CBS audiophile vinyl series launched in May 1980. Though associated with half-speed masters the series focus is audiophile treatment, as the releases in the series are either half-speed mastered, original digital recordings (considered audiophile at the time) or direct-to-disc recordings.
Wired is the third solo album by the British guitarist Jeff Beck, released on Epic Records in 1976. An instrumental album, it peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. Of the album tracks, four are originals by Narada Michael Waldenand one by Jan Hammer. Max Middleton contributed the homage to Led Zeppelin, "Led Boots", and Beck chose to interpret the Charles Mingus ode to saxophonist Lester Young, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", from the classic 1959 jazz album Mingus Ah Um. These last two tracks were long-time staples of Beck's performance repertoire.
Geoffrey Arnold Beck (24 June 1944 – 10 January 2023) was an English guitarist. He rose to prominence as a member of the rock band the Yardbirds, and afterwards founded and fronted the Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. In 1975, he switched to an instrumental style with focus on an innovative sound, and his releases spanned genres and styles ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion and a blend of guitar-rock and electronica.
Beck was ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone and other magazines' lists rankings of the greatest guitarists. He was often called a "guitarist's guitarist".
The album that introduced me to Jazz/Fusion Rock. A friend was playing Led Boots and I was simply blown away. When I asked who it was, he turned to me with a disgusted look and said "Jeff Beck of course!" Well that became the beginning of a life long love affair with that period of instrumental prog rock and jazz fusion. "Head for Backstage Pass" was a mind blower as well. "Sophie" quickly became one of my faves. And of course, "Blue Wind" always got my blood pumping. When you hear the master playing, as only he can play, youre in for a good time. Fantastic from start to finish. I agree with the other user review, this album belongs along side the other giants of 70's fusion. Always brings back good memories when I spin this.
