Description

Artist:   SONNY ROLLINS

Title:   “A Night at the Village Vanguard”

Label:   BLUE NOTE.  Monaural first pressing on thick vinyl.  Labels are blue & white, with deep groove.  Catalog number is BLP 1581.

Label address is “BLUE NOTE RECORDS * 47 WEST 63RD * NYC” on both sides.

“BLUE NOTE” logo does not have “R” symbol.

“RVG” and “ear” symbol are stamped in the runout groove on both sides.

Personnel:

Sonny Rollins – tenor sax

Wilbur Ware or Donald Bailey – bass

Elvin Jones or Pete La Roca - drums.

Condition:

DISC:  VG++ / EXCELLENT with full original gloss.  Has been played a small number of times and handled with care.  There are a couple slight, superficial hairline paper scuffs on Side 1 but no serious marks or problems – only a few isolated, light tics for a few brief seconds in the first track.  Side 2 is virtually flawless.  Both sides play enjoyably with crisp, clean fidelity.  Labels are clean except for a small index sticker on one side with the number “275.”.  I am confident the winning bidder will be very pleased.

JACKET:  Jacket is nice VG to VG+ with some noticeable minor flaws, but no serious issues.   Front artwork is clean and bright.  Nice seams and spine.   There is a minor bend at the bottom right corner.  Reverse has some surface wear and ring wear, otherwise the jacket would grade considerably higher.  No writing or stickers.  Overall a very presentable jacket to accompany the GREAT sounding disc.

Track Listing

Side One:

  • Old Devil Moon
  • Softly as in a Morning Sunrise
  • Striver’s Row

Side Two:

  • Sonnymoon for Two
  • A Night in Tunisia
  • I Can’t Get Started

Review:

“Sonny Rollins, one of jazz's great tenors, is heard here at his peak with a pair of piano-less trios (either Wilbur Ware or Donald Bailey on bass and Elvin Jones or Pete La Roca on drums) stretching out on particularly creative versions of "Old Devil Moon," "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," "Sonnymoon for Two," and "A Night in Tunisia," among others.

Not only did Rollins have a very distinctive sound but his use of time, his sly wit, and his boppish but unpredictable style were completely his own by 1957.  Truly magical.”
