Description
This piece is a very special piece in my eyes.
This is the Japanese import 7" single for Japan's release of I Second That Emotion. These releases come as a record company sleeve with a single sheet in front with the imagery for the release and the band name and title. That is in a thin plastic bag but I have then placed all of that into a PVC sleeve to protect it. The cover sheet is two sided - the series of pictures with this listing try to illustrate all of this with the last image showing the record itself.
Japan were without doubt one of the finest bands of the early 80's with a distinct sound and look. The four members defined cool and it emanated from them. While David Sylvian naturally drew much of the attention as the singer all members of the band played an important role within it. I was lucky enough to see Japan live a number of times and I always found Mick Karn (bass) fascinating. not only did he develop a unique sound with his bass but he moved across the stage in a way that you could hardly see his feet move giving the impression that he was gliding.
In addition to being a renowned and in demand bass player (he worked with many outside Japan including Gary Numan and Peter Murphy of Bauhaus in a collaboration known as Dali's Car) but he was also an artist and sculptor. He even had his own exhibition that was well received in London. Sadly Mick Karn died a few years ago and the creative world lost one of the true greats before it had a real chance to recognise him in the way he deserved.
This is not just a Japanese import of a Japan classic - it is also signed by Mick Karn. I have held this piece for many many years but as I have nowhere to display it I am letting it go to, hopefully, someone that can.
I have never played the vinyl and have always held it in the protective PVC sleeve. I have tried to illustrate all of the component parts for those interested.
