Where do you start..?? How can you list the killer breaks, how do you describe the weight of these tunes..?? Fair to say it's THE cornerstone of the funk world, presided over by The Godfather himself..!! And when you later find out the circumstances of this lp it becomes even heavier than you ever thought it could be..!! This album was recorded throughout 1973 during an exhausting tour date schedule.
February, "Mind Power" is recorded, between touring.
April "Black Caesar" lp is released, and "Slaughter's Big Rip-Off" lp is recorded and "Take Some, Leave Some" is recorded.
May, the day after James completes a solid week at The Apollo Theatre in New York, he checks into The Hill Crest Hospital in Jamaica due to exhaustion..!!
June 14th James Brown's son Teddy dies in a car crash in New York..!!
June 15th James Brown flies to New York but begs his manager Charles Bobbit to identify his sons body..!!
That same evening he does the only thing he knows how and fulfills a gig date in Dayton, Ohio...!!!!!
James Brown buries his son on the 18th June and resumes the almost constant performing dates on the 22nd June..!!
The "Slaughter" album is released in July and in August his 4th album of 1973 is released, "Soul Classics Volume 2"..!!
August 4th, "Payback", "Doing The Best I can" and "Forever Suffering" are recorded, "Time Is Running Out" and "Shoot Your Shot" are recorded on the 23rd..!!
The touring continues all through September..!!
James' club "The Third World" mysteriously burns to the ground in Atlanta..!!
October 2nd James records "Stone To The Bone" between constant tour dates.
"Stone To The Bone" is released as a 7" single and the film deal for a soundtrack including these recently recorded songs falls through, so Polydor decide to rush release these songs as a two-record set, being the 5th album of 1973 from James Brown..!!!
It turns out to be The Godfather's biggest album in years, it is "The Payback" album...!!!
What a year..!!
Out of the fire of that year came an album that would blow the world away and inspire generations of party people, musicians, djs and producers..!! Without a doubt THE greatest funk album EVER made..!! Nobody else has ever come close to this joint, but then i don't think there has been or will ever be another James Brown..!! The music on this album is the product of a real life, lived with nothing but determination and real heart and real soul..!!!
Original double vinyl in ex+ condition, and original gatefold picture cover in vg+ condition, 30/40% seam splits to top edge. Spine excellent, front, back and inner covers excellent. original 1st Polydor US issue..!!! Good Luck..!!!
