Jackson C. Frank original 1st press self-titled 1965 LP VG/VG

This is the original mega rare and extremely collectable UK 1st pressing of Jackson C. Frank’s 1965 self-titled mono vinyl LP on EMI Records, catalogue number 33SX 1788, matrix numbers XAX-2930-1/XAX-2931-1, produced by Paul Simon (before he was famous!) and with sleeve notes by Bert Jansch. This record is acknowledged as having influenced every major British folk artist of the sixties, including Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, John Renbourne, Al Stewart, Ralph McTell and John Martyn.

Copies of this record are as rare as hen’s teeth. UK Record Collector Guide To Rare Record Prices quotes £350 for a mint copy, but, according to Popsike, one mint copy made over £1300.

Given the value of this album, I have digitised sections of the record and I would strongly encourage anyone who is thinking of bidding for it to contact me with a private email address so that I can send them digitised samples and they can then judge for themselves on condition. This is a forty eight year old record that was played for several years on poorer quality decks (Garard and Pioneer) before I got the Linn LP12 and, inevitably, there is some groove wear. This may be faintly audible on a few louder passages, though I have difficulty hearing anything myself.

This absolutely isn’t a mint copy and has several faint visible marks, but it is pressed on thick, quality vinyl that still has a high gloss and plays well, without any major deterioration in overall sound quality. I think it is reasonable to grade the record at VG (UK Record Collector gradings). 

The front laminated flipback sleeve shows edge creasing, some laminate creases and a three millimetre wide strip of discoloration down the opening side of the sleeve because the lamination never covered the entire front area of the sleeve. This is clearly visible in the enlarged version of the front cover photo. There is some discoloration and ageing to the rear (see photo) but no splits or tears. I have graded the sleeve as VG (UK Record Collector gradings).

I am not a record dealer. I am currently selling off my collection of some two hundred albums, mainly from the 1960s and 1970s (see my other items). These have been stored with care and unplayed over the past twenty years. Before this most were played only on a Linn LP12 deck and carefully handled. None of them are mint (it was a working record collection) but most are in extremely good condition. Many were bought as the albums were released and so are first pressings. I have tried to use the guide to condition in Record Collector as a guide to my descriptions of condition and am also providing other information such as matrix numbers wherever possible. I am also posting a number of photos of each album. If anyone buys an album and feels it has not been accurately described, I will happily refund as long as the record is returned to me promptly in the condition that it left here.
