The Jackie McLean Quintet ‘The New Tradition’

6 tracks/recorded on October 21, 1955, recorded in New York City, engineered by Rudy Van Gelder.
This LP formerly owned by the late (soprano saxophonist) Steve Lacy. This was confirmed by him during his visit to Montreal at the beginning of this year.
This is an extremely rare vinyl LP.
Personnel on this LP: Jackie McLean on alto sax, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, Douglas Watkins on bass and Ronald Tucker on drums.

Item Condition
A note about grading: Rather than splitting hairs with +++, and ++, I have limited the grades to those shown below. I give as detailed a visual description as possible; the grading is based on an overall feel for the state of the item. Item is conservatively graded, please keep this in mind when bidding.
Cover: g, right-hand part of image is printed in matte inks, left-hand is glossy, some yellowing around extremities, ring-wear and some scuffing more evident in glossy area, surface splash stain in upper right quadrant (in black image area) just above ‘McLean’ (does not pucker or distort cover stock) , right edge burred with some ink chipping, bottom right corner worn, light crease across lower right corner, some matting of image area along lower part of right edge; bottom seam edge has approx. 8” split starting from jacket opening (see link to additional photos and scans below); spine is yellowed with a couple of very light chips, top and bottom of spine lightly worn at extremities; top seam edge yellowed with ¾” fine split next to spine but otherwise clean and intact; back cover yellowed around extremities, general laminate wear, some ring wear, middle of top, right and left edges stressed and rubbed, some staining/spotting towards center, bottom right has small ballpoint markings (see link to additional photos and scans below), greyish discolouration along left (opening) side, upper right corner has a neat, carefully positioned address label showing the former owner’s Bleecker Street (NYC) address (see link to additional photos and scans below). The bottom seam split is the deciding factor in downgrading this item from vg- to g.
Record: vg-, Microgroove; RVG stamped in deadwax; label is black and red print, red will appear to be somewhat skewed in scan images, this is NOT inherent to the label but due to the scanning process; lines drawn inside the ‘A’ and ‘L’ in the ‘Ad Lib’ logo are part of the logo; label reads Ad Lib Records Box 119, New York 28, N.Y.; side A has fine 1½” crease in the upper left of spindle hole visible when album is angled to light, faint evidence of spindle wear; side B label has small ink chip at the outer edge left of the spindle hole, fair amount of matted spindle wear. Vinyl on side A sleeve-scuffed with some light mottling, some sheen, a few small, very fine scratches, run-out groove smeared with some fingerprinting; side B has numerous light scratches, scuffing, evidence of needle-wear, some sheen, bit of mottling, fair amount of fingerprinting and smearing in run-out groove.
This record has been played through in its entirety.
SIDE A)
Track: 1 Some light crackling on run-in track, hint of distortion on louder passages, slight tick/pop just before ending of the opening head, very light crackling throughout track audible primarily during softer passages; occasional very light tick, slight sibilance on cymbals throughout track, repeated light crackling during piano solo, light tick on outro of track leading into track 2.
Track: 2 Some distortion ‘around the edges’ of the alto sax, trumpet, and piano more or less throughout entire track, some light ticks, slight distortion occurring sporadically throughout track, some light crackling throughout but more evident during quieter passages. This track is the most sonically flawed on this LP.
Track: 3 Solid full-spectrum bass, slight sibilance on cymbals, slightly thinner overall sound on the highs due to wear, slight distortion on louder passages, some needle-wear/distortion on piano solo, occasional very light sparse crackling.
SIDE B)
Track: 1 Some light sparse crackling, somewhat more audible on piano solo, increasing slightly towards end of track, crackling continues between tracks and into track 2. Occasional ‘hint’ of distortion on louder passages. Sound is quite solid on this track overall, very ‘hot’ recording’.
Track: 2 Light crackling and light ticks somewhat more evident during quieter passages, a hint of sibilance on the cymbals but otherwise sonically quite intact, slight crackling and occasional light ticks evident during bass and piano solos, occasional HINT of distortion on parts of the piano solo, light sparse crackling increasing to a series of more audible ticks during closing bars of track, continuing into track 3, then decaying into a crackle in track 3.
Track: 3 Repeated light tick on initial 15 seconds or so, sporadic light ticks permeate the initial half of this track, light but sparse crackling evident during quieter passages, a few light ticks and slight distortion during alto solo, slight distortion on louder passages, some distortion/needle-wear evident particularly during piano solo, one tick/pop during final head, some crackling evident on closing bars and into run-out groove. Despite the appearance of the vinyl, this is overall a surprisingly solid listen, the aural flaws mentioned are in most cases outweighed by the superb quality and mastering of the original recording. Copies of this record are EXTREMELY rare.
