Jack and the Bean-Stalks – ‘Work It Up’ / ‘Chatty Chatty’ – Supreme 203 (UK)
No introduction necessary; absolutely superb sounds from Studio One, this time on the collectable Supreme label out of the UK. While commonly credited to the Kingstonians, I would hold that this record is most likely not by them at all, particularly as the characteristic vocals of the great Jackie Bernard are nowhere in evidence. In Jamaica, ‘Work It Up’ was credited to the Jail Breakers when it was released as the flip of Alton Ellis’s ‘Tumbling Tears’ in 1969. Roger Dalke’s discography lists ‘Chatty Chatty’ as having been put out by the Jail Breakers on Muzic City in 1970 while Roots Knotty Roots has it as a Studio 1 release, but no one seems to have ever seen a copy. A third, very rare and equally wonderful recording by the Jail Breakers, ‘Take You For A Ride’, came out on a blank Estick (or Studio One or Pressure Disc, depending on your source) seven-inch in 1970. According to Deadly Dragon Sound in New York, this record was produced by Jackie Estick (as indicated by the C&J matrix prefix) and in all likelihood featuring his vocals. In face of all this circumstantial evidence, an educated guess on my part is that it’s Jackie Estick rather than Jackie Bernard on these tracks as well, almost certainly on ‘Work It Up’. In any case, whoever sang them, these are two top tunes and this copy is in top condition; don’t miss out!
Condition: VG+ or perhaps a notch better; there are a couple of scuffs and marks but nothing that really detracts too much (please listen to the clips). Clean, ever so slightly worn labels (please see scans).
Please reply within three days after auction close. Payment via Paypal expected within five days. Will not be held responsible for uninsured parcels.
Shipping 1-2 singles: US $8.00 to addresses in Europe, USD $10.00 to the rest of the world. Shipping 3-5 singles: $13.00 in Europe, $15.00 to the rest of the world. Registered and insured shipping (with a tracking number) is an additional USD $11.00 per parcel to cover a total value not exceeding $80.00. For an insured total value of $1,500.00, which is the maximum, the surcharge is USD $16.00. Please get in touch for further combined shipping rates.
Shipping from Sweden is quite expensive – though the rest of the world is surely catching up – not least due to the fact that the weight increments are few and far apart, but it’s usually swift and safe.
American bidders, kindly note that shipping to the US is not US $4.00; this is eBay’s default setting and not applicable as I am based in Sweden. Please use the postage rates above, or wait for my invoice. Thank you!
Please note that like many other sellers of reggae on eBay, I’ve been the victim of so called ‘fake bidders’, bad minded people with no intention of purchasing the item they bid on and whose only game seems to be to ruin the auction for buyers and sellers alike. If your feedback is less than five, please get in touch with me before bidding, or unfortunately I will have to cancel your bid.
In the event that a record is won by a ‘fake bidder’, to save time, I will immediately relist it with a Buy It Now! option at the price offered by the runner-up bidder. Hopefully this auction will be free from any such problems!
Happy to answer any questions! Please see my other auctions with many rare items this week!
Thanks for looking and good luck!
