Label/Format: Vertigo – Full Spiral on side one and large Spiral logo on side two. Please note also, this is one of the earliest pressings ever on this famous prog label. This rarer example includes the text ‘A Philips Record Product’ at the 6 o’clock position of the text side label (please see close-up of this detail). Only the earliest pressed Vertigo’s ever included this rare text, most are seen without it.

Label Conditions: Both in truly STUNNING condition. Ultra clean and highly attractive with zero grubbiness or discolour to the ‘white side’, put simply, both look practically as made. Incredible Spirals with the large formats and rare Philips text. Side two retains a superb snowy white finish that is as fresh and clean as press day. A very tight fit on my Linn spindle with no ‘give’ whatsoever. I am struggling to find any spindle marks on side two and just the faintest of faint traces of a couple on side one (but look extra hard to find them). The large spiral on side one has the design perfect right up to the very hole rims with no chipping or wear at all. The earliest possible pair for this lovely album that will delight even the most discerning collectors needing this legendary Swirl.

Rarity: Philips Spirals are the most prized first editions to own and all titles are rare that include this text. This detail was quickly removed from the label. And try to find this first issue in much better condition: the cover, record and even the inner are all exceptional, the record played just once prior to my play-grade and one of the my very best Spirals ever. Rock’s most collectable label, this truly outstanding, practically museum-quality example will delight even the connoisseur collector. Such incredibly well preserved and looked-after copies are extremely rare, make no mistake.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Okay, not strictly ‘progressive’, but the label was. The band’s first and best album and the second title within the highly sort-after Spiral catalogue – probably the most famous and collectable progressive label of them all. Including one of the very best and famous covers too - this is always one of my favourite albums to offer and this is a supreme copy. Earthy blues-rock featuring a superb version of Bo Diddley’s ‘Who Do You Love’. This copy on offer features an incredible sounding ‘Philips’ product’ full spiral record. Both playing surfaces gleam and show barely any marks of any note. This is a top-drawer production and can be enjoyed with the ultimate details the first issues always offer. The cover is in fantastic condition with the least wear I have seen. Very wear-prone like most spiral covers, but this one does the famous ‘Lucy’ proud. For collectors wanting the earliest pressing and a gorgeous cover – and even the inner is almost as made – well this merits my highest possible recommendation – this fruity Vertigo grand old lady will rarely, if ever look better.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high: few Vertigo Spiral album covers were laminated, hence many are seen badly rubbed, grubby and ringworn. This beauty has been cover-protected from new and few will even get close to this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): like the record, one of the earliest Spiral covers ever issued or made. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces that are highly vulnerable to wear, especially ringwear and rubbing. This one has the original WARNING — Copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings. etc inside the gatefold, later versions had the word ‘Vertigo’ changed to ‘this label’. This was printed and made in England.

Cover Front: A few eyebrows raised when this first hit the shops I guess. Quite unusual to find this famous front looking this nice. The lack of rubbing, grubbiness and retention of rich unfaded colour will be immediately apparent. This has very few marks, any present are tiny and faint and the same for any creasing of which there are barely any. One ultra faint and small half moon type is the only one away from the edges and it shows little. The famous ‘Juicy Lucy’ smile is more than justified on this fantastic front.

Cover Back: The back is similar with no ringwear and is practically devoid of rubbing, a mere trace near the top right corner edge (again, look hard). The VO 2 – 847 901 VTY top right text is pristine. The only reason this has been lowered to Excellent(++) instead of Mint(-) is for some light pressing marks (circles) towards the bottom left corner, these I feel certain occured in manufacture from grippers from the production line (I was in the print trade for many years and I have seen these type of marks before). They show little, more under angled light of course. Barely anything detracts from this glorious cover, and I feel very confident few available copies will get close to the sheer beauty of this nigh-on unworn original cover. Also, beware of later ones being offered as originals, only the originals have the ‘Vertigo’ Warning text inside.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Pristine Mint with nothing to fault, this looks brand new. There is a fine hairline near the left edge, but this is a mark on the printing plate and NOT a blemish to the card’s surface.

Top Edges: Both near perfect up to the very right corner tips that have tiny rubs. Both very straight lie flush when closed.

Bottom Edges: Very light traces of rubbing, more on the back near the right corner. These fragile resting edges will prove hard to find better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and very sharp with barely any traces of wear. No feathering with minimal burr traces a and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge, the front is closed.

Spine and Text: The spine is in splendid condition. Very solid and straight with no compression and minimal tilt. Folded square, both right edges meet up near perfectly together and parallel too. All text is fully present and unworn, even the fine and fragile VO2. Even on the foldlines are unrubbed, this is so unusual on these but what a difference it makes, the difference between an average cover and an exceptional one (please see my close-up picture).

Corners: The right corners have light tip rubs, a little more on the bottom pair. The spine pair have little. Excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A visual delight for Swirl collectors, hugely prone to all forms of wear, especially so being so dark. The earliest printed examples with the proof being the ‘Vertigo’ credit inside, are incredibly hard to find like this. Now 42-years-old, only the most carefully stored and least handled examples remaind like this. The fewest blemishes I have seen on this second ever Spiral album cover, this famous lady will rarely be seen fresher, cleaner or better looking. Most-all collectors will enjoy this one.

The Swirl Inner: MINT(-): and going very close to remining of new. This famous inner sleeve rarely ages well, most are tatty, aged with browning and glue darkening. Put simply, this is magnificent. The paper still white and barely darkened at all with any seam adhesive browning minimal and very pale. Both window circles are as neat and crisp as when made and the lining ultra clear and solidly attached. No creasing of any note and even crinkle is minimal and faint, all edges unsplit with no repairs and finding this original swirl inner better will prove immensely difficult.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a fantastic visual copy that is very clean with impressive shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy barely run-in in vinyl terms with any surface trace marks minuscule, few, tiny and ultra faint. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors, even the highly discerning collectors can apply.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautifully preserved record plays up to it’s lovely visual condition with audiophile sound quality that only the very first issues offer. Strong and powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal to none and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Being ultra critical, a trace of crackle was noted for barely a second about half way through the final song but nothing else. How many records this great age will ever better that? Few first pressed copies will even get close to this, let alone outperform it I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this sublime record – one the best albums on this most cherished and collectable label. This copy will prove immensely difficult, to near impossible to find better for clean enjoyable sound with clean inner and highly attractive, little worn cover, and on that basis can be strongly recommended. An available Philips first issue will not prove easy to find much better than this, a truly outstanding piece.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
