Label/Format: Elektra – original orange and silver format with rough textured surfaces.

Label Condition: Both in superb condition in terms of being ultra clean and fresh, any spindle marks are few, ultra fine and faint. The only issue is a plastic ‘gun’ sticker on the side one (nothing on side two). The one and only original owner clearly filed his records in this manner. Not exactly unattractive as such and nice in some ways to see the 1969 date reference. These are very difficult to remove and I will not dare risk it – being part of it’s history, I personally have no issues with it. A fellow dealer told me they can be successfully removed with the careful of use of heat from a hairdrier – I would personally leave well alone.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 139 grams. A very good weight for any record and even above average for most of this era.

Rarity: Quite hard to find as a first issue, most are seen on the Butterfly format repressed label. Of the few examples of this I have round as a first issue, most-all have been scratched and, apart from my own copy, is the best example I have ever seen or heard.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the most beautiful ‘folk’ albums ever issued by one of the most underrated, undervalued and sadly overlooked (especially in the UK) artists ever. Judy Collins has one of the most stunning voices ever put to record and the only reason I can think of for lack of massive appeal is she rarely wrote any of her own songs. I adore this woman, her beautiful soprano voice has a clarity and purity few others came close to matching. Her choice of material was always perfect especially in the earlier years and I have to say few artists ever match, let alone better the original songs, but Judy did just that and as impossible as it may sound, her version of the Sandy Denny title song is at least as good as Sandy’s and in some ways even surpasses it – controversial opinion maybe, but it’s flawless and no-one admires or likes Sandy Denny more than me. Carefully selected songs from classic artists including Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Robin Williamson et al makes this album one of the most important female folk albums to own and it’s a hard one to find as a UK original. Every song on this album is a masterpiece, backing includes Stephen Stills and the opening track will be familiar to many – Rolf Kempf’s ‘Hello Hooray’ made famous of course by Alice Cooper in 1973. Who Knows... has songs so moving and hauntingly beautiful I hardly have the words to express them in my text here. Cohen’s dark ‘Story of Isaac’, with its lovely harpsichord backing, the moving ‘First Boy I Loved’ by Williamson (ISB) and the self written ‘My Father’ are delightful. As stated, the title song (one of the greatest songs ever written) is breathtaking and includes Stills on electric and acoustic guitars. The album concludes with the tragic and movingly sad traditional tale of ‘Pretty Polly’ a song so desparing you want the end to change every time you hear it – few music lovers could fail to be moved. This is Judy’s masterpiece and the only reason it’s being offered is because I already have a copy, it’s the first original UK copy I have seen for simply years good enough to offer – in fact, this record is probably even better than my own. The cover always suffers wear, but little one this one. Delicate, fragile and rare, if you want just one Collins album in your collection this has to be THE one – but I guarantee you wont stop at one after hearing this album. I simply hope this sublime album goes to a deserving and appreciative winning bidder.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. The black line on the top of the front near the left corner is not a pen mark, but simply an overprint probably to cover the original US artwork.

Cover Front: Judy looks stunning here and those beautiful blue eyes are legendary – yes ‘Suite: Judy Blue Eyes’ was written for her by the man in her life at the time – Steve Stills – and features on the Crosby, Stills and Nash album issued in 1969. A lovely cover but so often ruined by excessive rubbing and ring marks. Any rubbing to the unforgiving deep coloured artwork is minimal and faint, quite possibly the least I have ever seen in fact. Still fresh and clean with few marks or creases. Any present being ultra fine and faint. Hugely prone to sticker marks too, this has none and this lovely front sets the bar very high.

Cover Back: Very similar, just love that psychedelic dress Judy, this was a wonderful era and although the dress was ‘fashionable’ at the time, the music is not psychedelic – just classic folk-rock of the highest quality. There is some light staining near the spine edge but sufficiently light to register little. Indeed this may possibly be adhesive darkening, but that is mild speculation. This apart, little else to fault with again, any creasing or marks being few and light. Any trace of record rim marks are equally faint and I will say, this is easily the best back I have yet seen on the EJD original printing of this cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside here, any minor blemishes are only just seen with scrutiny under light, the lack of set-off on the left white area us very unusual too.

Top Edges: Barely any traces of wear up to the corner tips.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with practically no wear – crisp and neat with any burr traces minuscule. Record entered on right outside back edge, the front is closed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and folded near square with little wear, all text is nigh-on perfect.

Corners: Cornerwear is generally mild and quite light. Very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine all round example of this fragile late-60’s cover, one that will prove hard to find much better when taken into context of age and vulnerability. This very attractive example will seldom be found much better and it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: little real wear but aged with some moderate darkening, mostly near the edges. This is a Polydor-style inner that is polylined. Both window circles are pristine and the lining clear with minimal crinkle. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. The record rim has left pressmarks but how many will avoid that? This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy, this without doubt has been played very little and finding 60s pressings like this are truly exceptional. Very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. Any surface marks are few, fine and very faint. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound – vitally important on any vocal type album but even more important on one of the great folk soprano voices ever, Judy could almost be in the room singing here. I also have to mention too, this early pressing blows away the later, more thinly pressed Butterfly label copies with a more dynamic, powerful and richer sound mix that lies in these deep early grooves. All frequencies are super sharp and clear - sound quality is fantastic with a wide dynamic range and very full and detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops and clicks were noted. I feel few copies will play much better than this and nothing spoilt my enjoyment play-grading this stunning album. Both channels are clean and sharp, the music focused and precise, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored and looked after, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. This copy will prove very difficult to find better – both record and cover are always a real challenge. One of my favourite female artist albums ever and one I offer with my strongest recommendation.

Final Summary: Can I clearly state again, without any reservation this is one of the finest female vocal albums I have ever heard and for me this remains a very special album. Easily as important as many of the ‘classic’ folk albums ever made by the likes of Dylan, Drake, Denny, Donovan, Cohen etc, etc, etc. Not famed so much for her writing (although the few songs she did write are brilliant) but the classic material, vocals and performance was second to none. This is a beautiful 5-Star album that does often feature in all time greats lists, a superb full band backing with the Steve Stills sond dominant and an expressively beautiful voice that few could ever match. Yes Judy Collins should be adored by more and if for any reason (hardly any excuse accepted) this lady has eluded your turntable all these years, give this one a try, it’s probably her best ever but never disregard any of the others before and after at least up to the mid-70s. A wonderful album that demands to be heard again (and again, and again and again...). I think by now you are aware I am smitten on Judy and this album in particular, it an absolute bona-fide classic, do not lose this one.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
