VINYL CONDITION: all sides gorgeous NM probably played once or not at all. The side with the Sonata no. 2 has one tiny scratch & an inner sleeve scuff. these absolutely do NOT affect play. This side is EX. Playback is stunning.
BOX CONDITION: Lovely EX/NM no problems at all, just a general age. NO SPLITS, WRITING OR TEARS.
DETAILS: Amazing and legendary 3 album solo violin set. Amazing STEREO AUDIOPHILE PRESSING. This is an original GOLD LABEL. Very well cared for copy, so GOOD LUCK!
Joseph Szigeti was a Hungarian violinist. He was one of the preeminent European violinists in the first half of the twentieth century, an enthusiastic promoter of modern music and an inspiration for many composers of the time. He was frequently praised by both critics and his fellow musicians for his combination of excellent instrumental technique, sincere musicality, and strong intellect.
Everybody has their favorites among the great postwar recordings of Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin. Some prefer the steely lucidity of Jascha Heifetz's 1952 recordings or the silken profundity of Arthur Grumiaux's 1960-1961 recordings or the objective severity of Henryk Szeryng's 1968 recordings or the sublime austerity of Sandor Végh's 1971 recording or the passionate clarity of Nathan Milstein's 1975 recording. Some even prefer the unrelenting intensity Joseph Szigeti's long out-of-print 1955-1956 recordings. Taped in Columbia's New York City studios by Seymour Solomon and originally released on his Vanguard label, Szigeti's performances may lack Heifetz's polish or Grumiaux's refinement or Milstein's translucency or Szeryng's transparency or Végh's transcendency. But Szigeti's performances do have something all of them lack: a rough attack and a raw honesty that goes deep into the emotional, ontological, eschatological, and metaphysical meaning of the music. While Szigeti's interpretation might be more than listeners accustomed to Heifetz, Grumiaux, Milstein, and Szeryng can take, listeners who revere Végh's austerity may find Szigeti's intensity to their taste.
