"Away from Factory's confines, or more likely Martin Hannett's omnipresent production, Joy Division seem to breathe way more freely on "Peel Sessions", daring to sound cleaner, with shades of grey peeled off to an extent they're discrete reminders, tame to a production safety level from where the intensity and playful energy shine a new light of hope where the beloved originals remain kept in isolation. Knowing about the group's members initial disappointment with the sound on their first album, maybe this is where they demonstrate how they wanted that particular album to sound - "Peel" versions of "She's Lost Control" and "Insight" are especially mesmerizing. A truly stellar performance by all involved."
