Rarity: The record itself is not rare, this sold well and actually charted and got the band noticed. But this earliest made copy is somewhat special. A mere handful were pressed with limited distribution in transluscent vinyl. This record appears to be a standard black issue but when held to light an eerie red light can be seen passing right through the record. A few pressings of the two proper albums also exist like this but are quite elusive. These transluscent pressings are quite rare and remember, many did not buy the 7 inch version of this popular single, but purchased then then fashionble 12 inch version. Being a popular single, only a tiny percentage of these will be found where light passes through the vinyl – please see this unusual effect on my picture – I got my wife to hold this up to directly to a ceiling bulb, hopefully the strange red effect can be seen. The definition of ‘transluscent’ means light will pass through an object but not detail, this is only the second copy of this classic single I have found that actually does this, most are a solid black and let NO light pass through. So a rare and unusual gem for the serious Joy Division collector.

Brief Info: The single that got this brilliant band recognised, a somewhat surprise hit that stimulated the sale of the album on which this song did not appear. This seven inch single plays the title song at both 45 and 33 rpm with varying sound, the other song is the equally brilliant ‘These Days’. A wonderfully downbeat song from the troubled mind of the brilliant Ian Curtis, this has to be one of the greatest singles of all-time. This copy includes the picture sleeve and what appears to be a standard black record. Well wrong, this one is the rare original that is transluscent under light (please see my picture to prove this is no lie). Few were pressed like this and distribution was strictly limited. The ultimate copy for the Joy Division connoisseur.

Cover Grade and Format: Near Excellent: a single unlaminated sleeve with two flipbacks on rear. The top has a recessed opening. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front: Minor corner rubs and a fine and small ring arc from the saw-tooth record label area rim. Mild record impression is near unavoidable on these thin card single sleeves. All looks fine and I can hardly believe this one is now over 30 years old.

Cover Back: Similar again, the flipbacks are neat and solid and again this back has just a trace of record label rim area. The recessed top opening is neat and also undamaged, mild discolour on the very end.

Edges & Corners: All edges have rubbed but no splits or repairs. Being so thin and fine, most-all will have a little wear.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Very Good: with surface marks fine and whispy and mostly faint, singles kept within unlined card inners rarely escape light surface marks. These have no sound. A fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and solidly pressed. Visually a nice record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic single plays above its visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and faint and this actually plays better than the visually superior one I sold a couple of years ago, no pops or clicks were noted. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, it’s beauty is not confined to the music, but that eerie glow makes this extra-special. This copy, as a transluscent, will prove difficult to find significantly better and on that basis can be strongly recommended.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
