"Atmosphere" is one of the defining recordings of the post-punk era — a slow, cathedral-scale piece built on Bernard Sumner's arpeggiated synth, Peter Hook's melodic bass, and Ian Curtis's vocals at their most exposed. Originally released in France on Sordide Sentimental in a pressing of a few hundred copies, it was effectively unavailable to most listeners until Factory brought it to the UK in October 1980. The B-side is a re-recorded version of "She's Lost Control" — longer and more atmospheric than the Unknown Pleasures take, with Martin Hannett's production pushing the space and ambience further than the album version. This single was released two months after Curtis's death and carries the weight of that context in every groove.

This is an original UK first pressing on Factory Records (FACUS 2/UK), released October 1980. The label is white with the circled "f" typographic logo — clean, minimal, correct for the original issue. The label reads "A Factory Records (U.S.) Inc. Product re-released in the United Kingdom," reflecting the routing through Factory's US entity before UK release. Pressed at WEA, West Drayton.

The lacquers were cut by George Peckham — "A PORKY PRIME CUT" is etched on both sides. Peckham also inscribed two phrases into the deadwax: "HERE ARE THE YOUNG MEN" on Side A and "BUT WHERE HAVE THEY BEEN" on Side B — among the most celebrated deadwax inscriptions in post-punk collecting, and a direct authenticating detail of this pressing.
