The true history of ' Penina '

' Penina ' is a song that Paul McCartney wrote in the Algarve, in Portugal, in the 1968 end, when it was of vacation in the New Year with Linda McCartney in the south of the country.

In contrast of that if he judges and of that it is published in many books and edited in some records, the song was written for the Portuguese group Jotta Herre and Carlos Mendes does not stop, vocalista of the Sheiks , considered the "Beatles Portuguese".

The Jotta Herre had edited the song in a EP Philips 431923PE, with more three original songs of the band. Carlos Mendes also edited the song, being this the one that appears in célebre album "The Songs Lennon And McCartney Gave Away - By Original The Artists" (EMI NUT18, 1979).

Unhappyly, none of Portuguese editions of "Penina" includes the date of the respective edition, not if knowing with absolute certainty who it edited first, if the Jotta Herre , if Carlos Mendes. They are both of 1969, but this is still a point in inquiry. A thing is certain, however: Paul McCartney wrote the song for the Jotta Herre and Carlos Mendes does not stop.

The proper Paul McCartney partially counts the history of "Penina" in fanzine of the old club of fans of McCartney, "Club Sandwich": "I was the Portugal of vacation and a night, when it returned to the hotel, already drunk, I decided to take plus cups to the bar. It was a group to touch and I finished for going to stop to the battery. There the hotel called Penina and improvised a song on this name. Somebody asked to me if it could be with it and I gave it to it. I never thought about recording it proper ".

In the contralayer of the album "The Songs Lennon And McCartney Gave Away", it writes Tony Barrow, then assessor of the press of the Beatles, on "Penina" and Carlos Mendes: "the obscurest song of the album is a writing of 1969 of Carlos Mendes," Penina ", that, believes, has been given the Carlos for Paul when it was of vacation in Portugal ".

This is not however exact as the proper Paul McCartney wrote in the "Club Sandwitch". The song was given to the Jotta Herre and not it Carlos Mendes. The Jotta Herre was a group of the city of the Port, in the north of Portugal, that touched in the Penina Hotel, in the Algarve, close to Portimão. For more incredible than it seems the Hotel, of luxury, and one of most famous of Portugal, still today does not have in its walls one any plate to designate the gesture of Paul McCartney. It would be good for its tourism.

The Jotta Herre ("jotta "of Jaime, that if it disconnect of the group, and" herre "of Rui) was formed by Aníbal Wedge, today exporting entrepreneur in the ceramic sector, Rui Pereira, deceased in 1972, Carlos Pinto, today president of Sony Music in Portugal, and Giuseppe Flaminio, today representative of the Universal Music in the city of the Port.

In 1969 sigle of the Jotta Herre with the songs ' Penina ' (with credited authorship the Paul McCartney, duration of 3 min 04 s) and ' North ' was edited in Spain one (credited the Pereira, with 2 min 50 s).

Nowadays, the song is registered in the Portuguese Society of Authors as being of the authorship of Lennon/McCartney. Everything because of the pounds and of the the two agreement enters Beatles how much to the composition of songs. Although Paul McCartney has affirmed that "Penina" would not record it appears recorded for the Beatles in the COMPACT DISC pirate "Unheard Melodies, The Songs The Beatles Gave Away", together with the versions of the Jotta Herre and Carlos Mendes.
