Description
Up for sale is a rare 1969 U.S. White Label Promotional first pressing of Joni Mitchell’s second studio album, Clouds. Distributed strictly to radio stations and music critics ahead of the official commercial street date, this particular copy represents the earliest pressing batch of this record. This copy has -1A Markings on both sides.
At the dawn of her international breakthrough, legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell served as primary producer, composer, and layout artist for this definitive sophomore release. Recorded in early 1969 at the legendary A&M Studios in Hollywood, California, the sessions were engineered by Henry Lewy. Most of the tracks features Mitchell completely stripped back—relying strictly on her ethereal acoustic guitar, multi-tracked vocals, and a mandolin.
Clouds is widely regarded as the blueprint for the 1970s confessional singer-songwriter movement. It earned Mitchell her very first Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance in 1970 and includes her most timeless masterpieces, such as "Both Sides, Now" and "Chelsea Morning".
Vinyl Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+/EX)The vinyl retains a brilliant original glossy sheen. The vinyl has minor visual paper scuffs or faint hairlines that do not affect playback. Playback clean, crisp, and dynamic sound with some minimal surface noise. Sounds like poetry on a warm sunny day. The vocals and guitar just shine on this LP.
Jacket/Sleeve Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+)The gatefold jacket is structurally sound with robust seams. It features the iconic, authentic vintage orange "PROMOTION - Not For Sale" sticker cleanly affixed to the lower front center. The colors of Joni's self-portrait remain vivid. This jacket also contains the signature first-pressing manufacturing anomaly where the print shop masked/airbrushed the back cover artwork seam lines by hand at the factory.
Side A Runout Etchings: 30885 RS 6341A 1A (with the Custom Matrix lowercase o stamped) Side B Runout Etchings: 30886 RS 6341B 1A (with the Custom Matrix lowercase o stamped) Pressing Plant: Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Santa Maria, California
Significance: The 1A / 1A designations prove that these grooves were pressed using the very first master tape lacquer cut. Because promo pressings were generated first, they represent the absolute highest-fidelity audio available before mass factory production wore down the stampers.
