Johnny Cash had a wealth of great albums over his career that spanned decades but few capture the power and control of At Folsom Prison. The is partly because of the set list which draws upon his well known tracks and other raucous Cash numbers. It is also due to the delivery from Cash and the supporting cast. In typical Cash fashion, he goes beyond just singing and tries to connect with the audience via dialogue between tracks which is preserved in this recording. This means subtle and not so subtle jabs at the guards, the warden, and prison life in general. Overdubs or not, the album sounds wonderful today as it did in the sixties. An all-star cast joins Cash here including Carl and Luther Perkins, the Statler Brothers, and his soon to be wife June Carter but make no mistake, Johnny Cash is the front man on each and every track. The set is colorful and diverse as Cash runs through both slow ballads and faster, more engaging tracks. There is an odd juxtaposition between the religious oriented tracks(see "Greystone Chapel") and the faster, more rebellious tracks that Cash is known for ("Cocaine Blues" and "Folsom Prison Blues"). This contrast in lyrics and styles sheds light on his beliefs and results in a very personal and intimate album. He is not afraid to voice his thoughts on prison and societal reform while also firmly stating his religious beliefs as well.

There is a wonderful mix of country, rock, gospel, and blues to be heard on this album. The versions of "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Cocaine Blues" are two of his best tracks and show the younger, more rebellious side of Cash as he sings about taking a shot of cocaine and shooting his woman down. "Green, Green Grass of Home" contrasts these both. A slower track about a prisoner that remembers the simple life back home, we hear Cash speaking directly to the inmate crowd and connecting with them. "The Legend of John Henry" (bonus track) is another classic Cash track which tells of John Henry battling the steam drill. This is a lyrical gem and his delivery is spot on. The track is not derailed by the often off beat hammer sounds accompanying his singing. There are a few fun tracks including "Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog" and "Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart" which really gets the crown going. His performance is equal parts touching and comedic. The result is a delivery that serves some pretty heavy messages without sounding preachy. Great duets with June Carter showcase the chemistry between the two. "Jackson" is one of the albums best with June's country feminine voice pairing well with Cash's grisly delivery.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the place to start a Cash collection because of its accessibility. Many of his later works struggle to find the balance between effective songs and delivery. This is most apparent on his many gospel albums. A fantastic album deserving of all of the accolades it has received over the years.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear in one small area along the opening where the shrink wrap has receded; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-       Minor, faint, yellowish water stain noted in one bottom corner  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.   (nothing significant)
