from Route66SL bloodspot:
The first four pieces carribean influences in an acoustic jazz setting, while Surman’s own “Incantation” suite comprises a startling and exciting journey into modern jazz, incorporating elements of free jazz.
**
Surman’s 1968 debut album after stepping out of Westbrook’s band still sounds very fresh & accomplished. Surman cleverly sidesteps the dogmas & polarities of the time (free vs modern; American vs European; Afrocentric vs white etc.) Instead, the first half of the album features Caribbean music with a “West Indian” band, yes there is an obligatory version of Sonny Rollins’ Carnival, but this is definitely jazz with a local London twist – by way of Notting Hill & Trinidad! Vibrant, swinging, tuneful – you could dance to it – but done conscientiously as modern jazz not as trad exotica. The second half of the album unites the West Indian musicians with the cream of new British jazzers (basically the Westbrook band minus Mike) featuring Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland et al. The music here is post-Coltrane, mixing modern with free. The whole album works very well & is a timely reminder that one reason the British Jazz scene was so interesting & original in the late 60s was the input of West Indian (& South African) musicians who helped find a path beyond imitation of Afro-American models.
**
This was recorded when Surman was the main soloist with the Mike Westbrook Band in the 1970s, when the band contained everybody that was anybody amongst the younger British jazzmen. The other featured soloist on this album is the superb altoist Mike Osborne, also from the Westbrook band.
The first side is based on Caribbean rhythms, whilst side two is more like mid 60s Coltrane – one of Surman’s main influences.
Surman shows throughout why Jazz Journal critics had nominated him as the best jazz player in the world, and the much under-rated Osborne also plays with intensity and creativity. An essential purchase for those interested in the best of UK jazz. - By Bob Heath.
