Brief Info: A much in demand session musician and former Free member. John Bundrick, known professionally as ‘Rabbit’ has performed with many famous artists including Jethro Tull, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend, Eric Burdon and Mick Taylor and Back Street Crawler. This was his first solo album that includes a host of star musicians, one of two he made for Island. An underrated gem it is too, this was no major seller and fairly elusive. This a lovely copy and very early pressed, appearing little played and with terrific sound. My first one of these for a long time.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: In terms of wear, this front has little, a little mild dulling seen under light. A mild dink on the right edge and a hint of natural light fading on the very edge of the spine and on the top left corner. Overall, generally clean, fresh and attractive, only a small few fine edge and tip creases.

Cover Back: All very similar to front a dink on the bottom left corner and the same on the left edge. Again some dulling seen under light. But the general lack of creasing and especially ringwear on such a dark cover are major pluses, and this very challenging cover back will not be easy to find a great deal better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The lower corner tip creasing apart, the middle spread has little else to fault.

Top Edges: Minimal traces of wear, any present is very light and faint. Both straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: Light (back) to moderate rubbing, again straight and flush.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge which has hardly any wear. The back entrance edges are mainly crisp and sharp, any thickening or burring very little and light as seen viewed end-on, these are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. Any surface rubbing light, a couple of tiny tip-in spots likely, the text is pretty much all present with just a natural very fine central line formed purely from being opened.

Corners: Moderate tip rubs and a couple of dinks. Fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive item should please many collectors, but not the purists who only want perfection at any cost.

The Inner Sleeve: AROUND EXCELLENT: only marked down for the light ageing by natural discolouration of the seam areas. A plain unlined solid white inner with minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is super clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surface traces ultra fine, few and faint, even as seen critically under bright angled light. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence and visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays up to, and beyond it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and appears carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive and quite elusive Island record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
