John's first solo album release, and first of his "experimental" outings.
Credited to John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
The original premise of the "Unfinished Music" series was that John and Yoko were going to chronicle their lives together on record - this is the first of these releases.
Recorded one May morning between midnight and dawn in 1968 at John's Kenwood mansion in Weybridge (probably Sunday 19th May 1968). John's wife, Cynthia, had gone on holiday to Greece with Jennie Boyd and Magic Alex. Yoko had expressed an interest in John's avant-garde recordings using his home recording system, and they decided to make an album together.
So, John's first recording venture without his fellow Beatles was this weird album of sound effects and bodily noises.
The naked photographs were taken in the basement of Ringo's house in Montague Square, London in early October 1968. There was no way John was going to allow a professional photographer to take the pictures as he was too embarrassed, so he set the camera up using a delayed shutter release and took them himself.
Paul was strongly against the cover but he still contributed with a one line sleeve note which reads:
"When two great Saints meet, it is a humbling experience. The long battles to prove he was a Saint."
The record company initially refused to release the album unless the pictures were changed. But, eventually the album was distributed by Track records in the U.K. (as catalogue number 613 012).
But even with approval, the record company printers wouldn't print it, and many record shops refused to stock it. Even the music press opposed it and no editor would accept any of the adverts.
Not surprisingly, it sold only around 5,000 copies and did not enter the charts.
It was also the first solo Beatles album to be deleted by E.M.I.

LABELS: MINT-
Immaculate labels with just one light spindle trace on each side
VINYL Visual: MINT-
Both surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen and appear completely unmarked and like-new in normal light with just wispy light hairlines visible under very bright light
VINYL Audio: MINT-
In keeping with it's once played status the audio is flawless.
I have only reduced the grading to MINT- (minus) for one soft 'click' at the beginning of Side Two but as this album has many sound effects and (very) odd noises this 'click' may well be part of the recording.
This is a really stunning archive copy, unbeatable in my opinion, certainly the finest I have ever seen (by a mile) and the likes of another of this quality I don't think I'll ever see again
SLEEVE: MINT-
Clean and fresh with a beautiful deep glossy sheen and again, practically like-new with crisp, square edges and corners.
There is a small brown spot on the back but this is beneath the laminate and must have been present since manufacture.
The laminate has also been tightly applied and does not touch the sleeve along the spine. This is not 'laminate lift' (as it is sometimes described) as it was never actually stuck down in the first place and again is a manufacturing issue.
I have tastefully takes as many photos as I can of the cover without revealing any of the "offensive" bits
INNER SLEEVE: NEAR MINT
The original 1968 black inner sleeve is die-cut on one side and has two flip backs.
Again, this is in superb condition with no seam splits
