DESCRIPTION:
"ROOTS" - an extremely hard-to-find and controversial collection of John Lennon performing 15 songs that were originally recorded during the early years of the rock and roll era.

This LP was sold on TV by mail order in early 1975 when it was first released, but this seems to be one collectors call the definitive set when compared to the Apple Records "official version" released later that year.

The rarest album in John Lennon's solo canon, Roots was originally conceived in settlement of a copyright case lodged against the singer by publisher Morris Levy, following Lennon's use of a Chuck Berry lyric in the Beatles' "Come Together." Lennon agreed to record three songs published by Levy as part of his next album, and conceived a collection of covers paying tribute to his own 1950s roots — the hijacked Berry number, "You Can't Catch Me," amusingly, among them. The project was delayed following the abandonment of the original recording sessions with producer Phil Spector, but Lennon finally presented Levy with a 15-song reference tape of the recordings in late 1974. Just weeks later, in February 1975, Levy's Adam VIII label began running television commercials promoting Roots, a mail-order album subtitled, indeed, John Lennon Sings the Great Rock & Roll Hits. Capitol, Lennon's regular label, immediately issued their own revised version of the same LP, Rock 'n' Roll, simultaneously initiating legal action against Adam VIII. Roots was withdrawn and, following three years of litigation, all unsold copies of the LP were delivered to Lennon (presumably for destruction) in 1977. Among fans and collectors, however, there is no question as to which version of the album is superior. Not only does Roots feature substantially different, and much rawer, mixes of the Rock 'n' Roll material, it also includes two songs omitted from the Capitol set — a tremendous version of "Be My Baby" and a shimmering "Angel Baby." Both have since been released on sundry posthumous Lennon releases, but you really cannot beat hearing them in context.

THE VINYL RECORD
I have sold quite a few LPs on eBay, but I would not consider
myself an "expert" in grading.  My grading, based on the scales
below, is probably conservative at best.

There are no major imperfections on the LP surface.  There may be the usual
hiss often associated with vinyl albums, but I can safely say there was
nothing noticeable on this LP, as played on my Bang & Olufsen Beogram
turntable.  There are no skips and no scratches of significance.

VINYL CONDITION: EXC (see scale below)
LABEL CONDITION: EXC (see scale below)

VINYL and LABEL GRADING:
MINT:    Mint is Mint.  It looks like it has never been played.

NEAR MINT:    Very clean with just a few light marks.

EXC:    Light marks and/or few superficial scuffs and/or light scratches.
An enjoyable listening with possible light intermittent surface noise.

VG:    Marks and/or scuffs and/or scratches.
Still an enjoyable listening but with some surface noise.

G:    It plays, no skipping, but with lots of surface noise.  It is being offered because it is rare.

THE JACKET (or Cover)
The jacket is in very good condition, especially for its age.
There are visible signs of shelf wear on the front and and ring wear
on the back.  There are no seam splits and no tape repairs.

MINT:    Mint is Mint.  It looks like it has never been handled.

NEAR MINT:    Very sharp corners with no impacts or bends, like new.

EXC:    Small writing and/or a small split seam and/or a small bent corner and/or light shelf wear and/or a small tear, and/or light ring wear.

VG:    Writing and/or split seams and/or corner wear and/or shelf wear and/or tears and/or ring wear.

G:    Cuts and/or holes and/or missing parts
