      This auction is for TWO VERY DIFFERENT TWELVE INCH WHITE VINYL PROMOTIONAL COPIES OF JOHN LENNON / YOKO ONO'S "HAPPY XMAS (WAR IS OVER)".  BOTH ARE LIMITED EDITION!




      Both of these Capitol promo 12"ers were released the same year of 1986.  One side of each copy was play-tested once (more on this later).  Otherwise, they were never played.  Here are the details;



1.     CENTRAL VIRGINIA FOODBANK LIMITED EDITION NUMBERED PROMO  --  
     I believe that I had read about this in a small USA Today article at the time.  The first sixteen photographs are of this item.  The catalogue number for this release is SPRO-9894 / 47763.  
     The custom jacket has a note penned by Yoko on the front cover (pic #3).  Under her signature is the number of this particular copy...#1729/2000 (only 2000 were pressed...see photo #4).  Along the left side is says "Special Release", with the logos of radio station XL102 and television station WTVR (picture #5).  The back of the jacket pictures the personalities of both stations (photograph #7).  Proceeds from the sale of this single went to the Central Virginia Foodbank (pic #8).  


     There is a small scuff on the gold section of the "H" in "Happy" (photo #8).  The cardboard jacket is in near mint condition.



     Also included with this copy is the original radio station invoice receipt.  At the bottom, it says that the receipt is for the "Collector's Edition of Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon and Yoko Ono" (picture #9).  My USPS money order payment receipt is included as well (photograph #10).  



     The 12" white vinyl is in "excellent condition", with an explanation.  Pics #11 and #12 are of the vinyl and label.  I'm not too sure why it says that this was lifted from the 1975 lp "Shaved Fish", other than that was the only album it appeared on pre-1986 (it was not on the vinyl pressing of "The John Lennon Collection" from 1982...only later pressings added it).


     I always describe items as if you were holding them in your hands and looking at the item yourself.  Photos #14 and #15 are of the white vinyl surface.  You are really going to have to study these two photos to see what I will be describing.


     BOTH 12"ers in this auction have this same...let's say...irregularity.  The vinyl originally came in these heavy plastic jackets.  Over the decades, the plastics jackets would get "wavy" and would actually begin to fuse to the discs.  You can see an example of this wave on the jacket in the last picture.

     It was kind of tough to get pictures of the marks the vinyl jacket left on the vinyl.  Again, looking at pic #14, you can see these horizontal markings going across the vinyl surface.  In pic #15 you can see some blotches (where the light meets the dark sections of the photograph).  You can't see these markings when looking at the vinyl head on, but you can see them if you tilt the vinyl into the light.  

     I play-tested a side of each disc, and this did not affect playback at all (more about this at the end of this ad).  However, if the LOOK of the vinyl is a huge concern, please do NOT bid on these items.  There are similar copies out there for sale that can meet your criteria!  I want everyone to be happy with their purchase.

2.     CAPITOL RECORDS PROMOTIONAL TWELVE INCH  --  The catalogue number for this promotional release is SPRO-9930 / 47663-4.  This was a limited edition release of 2500 from Christmas of 1986.  Photographs #16 through #23 are of this item.



     Pic #16 is of the cover, with #17 - 18 - 19 being closeups of the label.  #20 is a side view of where the label is attached, and you can see that it has started to become unglued.  I'm sure it would peel right off if not handled with care, but as it stands, it is still attached.  #21 and #22 are of the vinyl and the labels (which I believe mimics the USA single release of "Woman Is The Nigger Of The World").  John and Yoko are billed on the A-side, while Yoko and the POB are billed on the B-side "Listen, The Snow Is Falling".


     And to reiterate, the plastic jackets have become wavy and left markings on the vinyl surface.


     I did play-test that A-sides of each piece.  Neither skipped.  The radio station/food bank copy did have medium tics throughout.  The Capitol promo had some low tics at the very beginning (where John & Yoko whisper Julian and Kyoko's names).  
     Interestingly, the food bank copy mix sounds "fuller", but fades out earlier (11 seconds earlier if you compare the label times).  You don't hear everyone shouting Happy Christmas at the end.  The Capitol promo goes longer, but the mix sounds "thinner".  The tics can well be because these are pressed on colored vinyl...which as we know, never sounds as good as black vinyl.

     By the way, I did separate the vinyl from the plastic jackets, and placed them in paper sleeves and generic white cardboard jackets.
