Description
For auction is JOHN COLTRANE's "The Believer," on Prestige PRLP-7292, MONO, 1964.
SOUND: VG
I listened to both sides completely. It sounds very good. My main criticism is a general "muddiness" to the recording. Not static or crackle, but more like a light hiss. When the music gets soft, its more evident. To my ear, it is most evident in the piano. The brass and reeds sound sharp, as well as the rhythm section. I therefore wonder if it is a recording issue, or is it intrinsic to the vinyl? I'm being very critical, in order to be transparent. I judged this aspect to be minor; i.e., it didn't keep the music from being very enjoyable throughout.
There were 2 stray, mild pops on side A. On Side B there are more of them - not too bad, but they're a little more prevalent.
VINYL: VG
The vinyl is essentially free of any superficial scratches or scuffs. However, it is sort of dull and cloudy. I wasn't sure if this was a "thing" or not. A cursory internet search found lots of people asking about it, how it should be graded, and what caused it. However, none of those questions was definitively answered! So, the surface of the record is dull, and I don't know if anybody cares about that because it sounds pretty good! And the surface of the disk is pretty free of any damage.
The record is on yellow-and-black "fireworks" label. The dead wax is stamped "Van Gelder" on both sides. To be honest, I'm not sure if this is deep-grooved or not. There are grooves in the labels, but they seem thinner than "deep" grooves.
COVER: VG+
The cover is very nice. The edges are solid, with a tiny bit of wear. Far bottom right 1-inch looking like it's on the verge of splitting but not there yet. Corners have modest wear/a little softening. Front cover is clean and unmarked with very minor ring/wear. Back is clean and unmarked except for "preview" stamp. Minor routine aging.

A nice record that sounds very good. No reserve, bidding starts at $25.
Every record I auction has been cleaned on a Nitty Gritty vacuum/cleaner. I played every record to determine if there are static, tics, pops, hisses, what have you. I endeavor to thoroughly report any extraneous audio "noise" or problems of any significance. Other than that, I will report on the general condition of each record, both vinyl and jacket, according to Goldmine standards, to the best of my ability.
Every record is put into a new, clean sleeve insert. In the case of an interesting original sleeve insert, I'll include that in the sale.
If you're into this stuff, you might want to save me to your seller's list and check back periodically. I'll be putting a lot of vintage jazz records up for auction.
