 Laminated Gatefold Cover ~ "Van Gelder" In Dead Wax
Recorded in May, 1966 NYC


VINYL : NM- : Heavy, thick, inflexible vinyl. Very black and shiny. Little visible evidence of play or wear (a couple very faint surface or paper marks). Seldom spun.

COVER : EX : Very heavy, open-up cover. Spine and all four seams intact. Lamination very slightly bubbling on front cover near bottom right corner. Minor ring wear & shelf wear. Inner spine intact. Inner cover slightly yellowing along seams. Minor corner wear. Spine is very flat, sharp & legible.

INNER SLEEVE : Original Impulse + new audiophile.

LABELS : Very sharp, no marks.

BEAR SAYS : Line-up includes Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Jimmy Garrison & Rashied Ali. Tracks include "Naima" (15 min), plus "My Favorite Things" (total time with intro=26 min!). Engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. Recorded May 28th, 1966. John Coltrane dies in 1967.



A SIMPLE VINYL GRADING SYSTEM :

Mint: Still Sealed/Unplayed/Unopened/the Holy Grail
Mint minus (M-): New and Possibly Unplayed ; a rarely used grade.
Near Mint (NM): Like-new, with little or no visible wear; very collectible.

Near Mint minus (NM-):
Almost like-new, very slight signs of play or wear (cosmetic.) Little or no surface noise.

Excellent (EX) aka Very Good double-plus (VG++):
Way above average, very nice, no serious flaws; slight noise possible. Played, not abused.

Very Good plus (VG+):
An above average used LP; a few visible surface marks or paper scuffs; minor surface noise.

Very Good (VG) :
An average used LP, far from perfect but not too rough; a few light scratches or several surface marks. Some noise but plays through with no skips.

Very Good minus (VG-) :
Reveals effects of lots of wear when spun, scratched but not shot, defective or warped.

Good, Fair, Poor (G, F, P) :
Seldom used lesser grades, (occasionally necessary for very rare titles.)

LP Cover grading is a much less exact, more subjective science. Generally, the truly collectible grades range from Mint to Excellent (VG++) depending on general wear. Main cover flaws such as split seams or spine splits, ring wear, cut or bent corners, hole punches, writing, water damage etc. should always be mentioned in a proper auction listing. Your item will be packaged with tender loving care. Records are always removed from jackets for shipping & are securely packed in nice new inner sleeves & polysleeves & then packed inside thick cardboard album mailers along with stiff cardboard inserts & sheets of bubble wrap to help provide a safe delivery.

Records are professionally sight-graded but not always play-graded. Please bear in mind that used LPs from the '50s & '60s are very rarely found in actual Mint condition, seldom in true Near Mint. Proper record grading involves skill, knowledge & honesty, not wishful thinking.
