Description
This is a rare first black label mono pressing of John Coltrane’s breakthrough masterpiece, “Giant Steps”, recorded in 1959 (within weeks of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue") and released by Atlantic Records in January 1960.
The laminated cover is in great VG+ condition, with no seam splits. There is a minor scuff (1 ½”) on the bottom of the front sleeve, and crunching on the bottom corners (pictured), and some age-related yellowing on the back sleeve. The record includes the original inner sleeve, showcasing contemporary Atlantic releases from 1959 and 1960.
This record is in VG condition. It has been play-tested and VSP-cleaned; while there are some scuffs on the vinrul --most notably a large one on side one (see pictures)-- the record plays with no skips, and sounds delightful. There is some hiss on side 1, and some popping on side 2 (specifically at the end of “Naima”).

"History will undoubtedly enshrine this disc as a watershed the likes of which may never truly be appreciated. Giant Steps bore the double-edged sword of furthering the cause of the music as well as delivering it to an increasingly mainstream audience. Although this was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one. Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers -- who was the only band member other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated -- replicating the lineup featured on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course.” - Lindsay Planer
