Description
For auction is JOHN COLTRANE's "Ascension (EDITION I)" on Impulse A-96, MONO, 1965.
According to Discogs: "Coltrane's Ascension was originally released with the second take of the music from the recording session on June 28, 1965. These original pressings are commonly referred to as 'Edition I.' Shortly thereafter, Coltrane expressed a desire to instead use the first take. Impulse swapped out the stamper(s) for one(s) with the first take and inscribed 'Edition II' in the dead wax - ceasing production of the original version. So, if you have an orange/black labelled pressing of Ascension from the mid-to-late 1960s, the presence or absence of 'Edition II' in the dead wax is the simplest way to determine which version you have. The solo order differs slightly between the takes; Edition II also features no drum solo by Elvin Jones".
SOUND: NM-
It has been machine-cleaned and I listened to both sides completely. The sound is fantastic, there's not a single thing I can say in terms of a caveat! You won't be disappointed!
VINYL: VG+
Visually, the vinyl is VG+, and most likely better. Not much to report, but a few very faint scuffs and smudges. I'm being overly cautious. The record has clean, white PROMO labels, see the photos. The matrix numbers are etched: A-95-A//A-95-B. The "Van Gelder" stamp is on both sides. THIS IS THE 1st EDITION ISSUE.
COVER: VG+
The cover is a gatefold. The edges are all solid and the corners fairly sharp. The front and back are laminated and retain most of their gloss. They have a bit of routine aging/yellowing, as does the interior gatefold. Everything is unmarked, and relatively clean and bright. Overall, very nice!
The photos are of the exact record up for bids. Look before you bid, ask if you want any additional info or pics.
Great record from a giant of jazz, in incredible condition! No reserve, bidding starts at $75.
Every record I auction has been cleaned on a Nitty Gritty vacuum/cleaner. I played every record to determine if there are static, tics, pops, hisses, what have you. I endeavor to thoroughly report any extraneous audio "noise" or problems of any significance. Other than that, I will report on the general condition of each record, both vinyl and jacket, according to Goldmine standards, to the best of my ability.
Every record is put into a new, clean sleeve insert. In the case of an interesting original sleeve insert, I'll include that in the sale.
If you're into this stuff, you might want to save me to your seller's list and check back periodically. I'll be putting a lot of vintage jazz records up for auction. I'm not a collector, nor an audiophile, but I think they are desirable if you're into this kind of material. Click "see other items" and thanks for looking!
