Description
FOR AUCTION: *** John Coltrane Ascension *** on Impulse A-95 from 1966. Lp is Mono. The trail off reads A 95 A-1 Edition II Van Gelder on Side 1 and A 95 B-1 Edition II Van Gelder on Side 2. This Historic outing can be looked at as Coltrane's answer to Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz of four years earlier. Coltrane, who progressed steadily throughout 1965 until he was largely specializing in atonality, is heard leading a large ensemble through a 40-minute piece that, except for some brief passages, is freely improvised. While the rhythm section kept the music moving, seven adventurous horn players performed emotional and sometimes violent solos and fiery ensembles. With Coltrane, Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders on tenors, John Tchicai and Marion Brown on altos adn trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dewey Johnson, the results are ferocious and a bit scary. - Scott Yanow
Lp is visually Excellent, some vinyl discoloration, but plays Near Mint. It is dead quiet between passages and plays with no background noise just High-Fidelity. The cover is in Near Mint condition. Grading System:
Mint = only reserved for Sealed/Perfect Lps 10/10. Remember no record is perfect. I deal with a lot of sealed records and cannot tell you how many times I've pulled a new record to play and theres a scuff or fingernail scratch on it. Remember most records were packed by hard working Hoosiers that couldn't wait for Friday to get here anymore than you or I.
Near Mint = the record may have been played once or twice on good equipment. Near Mint vinyl should sound New when dust is cleaned off and the records played with a properly aligned cartridge and good needle. A Near Mint cover should be one that either looks new or still has the shrink wrap on it. Near Mint is usually reserved for record collectors that don't mind spending premium in order to get the best quality copy of a recording. 9 out of 10
Excellent = Ex (8/10) May have a sleeve scuff or hairline scratch but 90% of the vinyl is brand new. Could have been stored in the climate such as a garage, basement or attic and from this may have some discoloration to the vinyl. This absolutely will not affect play. Not good enough to call NM but not a VG+ record either. We used to use this as VG++. I'm so picky with grading that many of my customers have told me they didn't know the difference between my NM and EX. I have just incorporated this grade in the last few years after buying and selling for 20 years.
Very Good + = VG+ is a grade that I use for most lps that have been played with care. It may have one or two scratches (should not be feelable with finger) that DO NOT affect play or some sleeve scuffs from being pulled and played. When put on your record platter a VG+ record should sound great. There should not be background noise (when properly cleaned) or pops, skips, or any other distracment from the music. You should be able to listen to a VG+ record time and time again and enjoy it. 6,7 out of 10
Very Good = Record has been played and played and played. Record will have background noise. Maybe a pop or skip on certain tracks. Covers may have seam splits. A "loved" piece of vinyl. 4,5 out of 10. Should still play without hurting your needle. Unless its very rare, I do not list VG records. This is also a good way to score rare records without breaking the bank! I grade according to Goldmine standards. I strive to keep my feedback 100% positive!!!
