Frank Zappa talked about a certain moment in the history of the record business, when the labels were still being run by the guys with cigars, and paradoxically it was possible for extremely experimental music to get released. The guys running the company were aware that they didn't remotely understand what the kids were listening to--they didn't like any of the stuff that was making them millions. So, for all they knew, a record like Freak Out would sell a million too. Shrug--let's just press it and see what happens.
But it did take a certain extra level of faith or inattention or idealism or bad business sense to put out this proto-ambient album by John Cale (just recently out of the never-selling Velvet Underground) and Terry Riley, the minimalist classical composer. It occurs to me that maybe this came about because of the sales of "In C," Terry Riley's delightful mesmerizing phase-out that had appeared on Columbia (in 68 (or so?))
Anyway, here it is, and notorious for having sunk without a sound, and in the days of vinyl it was considered quite a rarity. Nowadays there seem to be a few of them around, more than you'd expect, and any fan of Cale or Riley or for that matter Glass or Eno, could easily love this quixotic album with its Kim Whitesides dollhouse jacket.
Glossy vinyl after 53 years, and unique.
