The notion that songs stay static as soon as they've been recorded is, of course, entirely misguided. Anyone who has followed the careers of artists lucky enough to have been around for some time will know that over time those early efforts are either discarded or transformed completely. The latest from the multi-instrumentalist genre-hopping Joan Wasser revisits her debut album, 2006's Real Life, and offers a new perspective on songs that are now two decades old. At times the transformations can be jarring, such as the lurching, time-weathered urgency of 'Save Me' which, thanks to the grizzled vocals of Iggy Pop, now feels like a desperate plea made by a pensioner in a Berlin nightclub. 'Real Life', a song steeped in longing, takes on a weighty significance when that longing has been ongoing for 20 years. That it is placed at the end of the album is clearly no coincidence and the idea that Wasser may return to it in 2046 is somewhat worrying. Some things change with time, some things stay the same.
