JIMMY McCRACKLIN
WHAT’S THAT
Jimmy McCracklin grew up in Missouri, his main influence on piano being Walter Davis. After a stint in the Navy during World War II, he bid St. Louis adieu and moved to the West Coast, making his recorded debut for the Globe logo in 1945.
McCracklin recorded for a daunting array of tiny labels in Los Angeles and Oakland prior to touching down with Modern in 1949-50, Swing Time the next year, Peacock in 1952-54. Modern in 1954, and Irma in 1956.
The nomadic pianist left Chess after a few more 45s, pausing at Mercury, stopping in 1961 at Art-Tone Records, and winding up at Imperial.
McCracklin's bluesy style and songwriting is sooooooo strong. Although he didn't have many hits with these first efforts for Imperial, he would chart high in '65-'66 for the label with songs like "Think," "My Answer" and "Every Night, Every Day." If you dug those, you'll dig these the most.
This one finds him with a killer jiver called “What’s That (part 1)” which begs the question - where is part 2, 3 and 4 ?!?! On the other side is a ballad (rather unusual!) and it’s “The Bridge.” This December 1960 single was reviewed in Billboard as “fervent warbling stint by McCracklin on a fellingful gospel-flavored them with dual market potential. Good side.” The topside is “Exhuberant rhythm-novelty with danceable tempo and sung with showmanship…”
