What we have here technically DOES NOT EXIST and is not supposed to exist. To our best knowledge, the existence of this record-club-only issue previously has never been substantiated, and none of the price books and guides currently in print make any reference to its existence or background. According to both Tim Neely and Neil Umphread price guides (multiple editions), the only Jimi Hendrix album ever issued on Capitol Records Club/Reprise label (and with the different catalog number - assigned by CAPITOL records and NOT by Reprise), was his posthumous "Rainbow Bridge" soundtrack. The historical importance of this item cannot be overestimated. Namely, Capitol records and Reprise were at loggerheads over Jimi Hendrix' career literally from the very first moment Jimi Hendrix signed for Reprise, with Capitol claiming (more or less successfully) that Jimi was contractually tied to Capitol Records and that he owed them (at least) one more album. We believe - but have no firm or concrete proof to substantiate our claim - that this Capitol Records pressing was Reprise's attempt to toss a little something to Capitol records in order to appease them. If this was the motive, it did not work. Capitol pressed on until they forced Jimi to record his final album (Band of Gypsys) for Capitol records (chalk one for corporate greed, for Heavens know that “Band of Gypsys” was Jimi's finest hour, and not merely a "contractual obligation album").

To go back to the "Live at Monterey" album for a second. This version has a distinct Reprise Records customized label which makes a pointed reference to the Capitol Records (see the photo of the label); the cover has a DISTINCT Capitol catalog number (SKAO-93371) rather than its regular Reprise number.  It also has a unique white rim along the edges of the cover which is unique to the Capitol Record Club pressings of some titles. Another curiosity: This Capitol Records issue clearly uses old 2-tone Reprise label which was in print between 1968-1970, meaning that this particular pressing was CLEARLY issued in Jimi's lifetime. Literally and figuratively, a piece of history, not to be missed at any price.

***

OK…where do we start? Let's start with Jimi: this legendary, incendiary Jimi Hendrix performance (“incendiary” to be taken literally here: Jimi actually doused and torched his guitar in Monterey) is one of two or three pinnacles of Rock music. Think of this performance as Jimi Hendrix dropping a REAL Big One on the world of Pop and Rock music. In the mayhem that ensued, nothing would ever be the same. And, no, after playing this disc "you will never listen to the Surf music again" (certainly not the way you did before Hendrix  cremated his Guitar for the whole world to see).

Ah, but wait…you ain’t heard nothing yet…compared to what you are about to find on the other side of this record, Jimi Hendrix's side is basically a filler - a light aperitif; a humble hors d’oeuvre to a delicious five-course meal Otis Redding is about to serve you. Flip the disc to the Otis Redding side and hear what we totally, firmly, believe is the SINGLE GREATEST live performance in the history of recorded music. According to the legend, after Otis' 15-minute performance with Booker T. & the MG's and Mar-Keys (he was more or less dragged away from the stage by the police despite protestations from the audience, because he overstayed his brief time slot), Mama Cass was gasping for air, Janis Joplin was weeping uncontrollably, and Brian Jones and Pete Townsend were standing there, deaf, dumb and… numb. No wonder. Nothing we've heard in 34 years of collecting music matches, let alone tops, the screaming passion, the agony and the ecstasy,  and the brutal intensity - almost violence - of Otis's Monterey performance – the very last live performance of his brief life. You can literally hear Otis struggling in between songs to regain his breath.  If ever a performer EXPLODED on stage in a mushroom cloud, this is IT. Show us another concert performance of this level of emotional intensity, if you can. SHOW US!!! WE DARE YOU!!!

In other words, on side 1 Jimi Hendrix douses and torches his guitar. On side 2, Otis Redding sets HIMSELF on fire!!!

Finally, for those doubting Thomases who claim that Otis Redding had a voice of only limited range: hearing this live version of "I've been loving you too long" should keep ‘em mum for awhile.

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). ·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
