Just prior to forming the Experience, Jimi Hendrix hit hard times. He had pawned his guitar and was living in a New York City hotel, which is where he met Curtis Knight, a soul singer who worked the local Harlem circuit with his band the Squires. Knight gave Hendrix a spare six-string and brought him into the Squires, where he was soon ushered into the studio to record the single "How Would You Feel." There, Jimi met record man Ed Chalpin, who insisted Hendrix sign a record contract prior to the start of the session. The guitarist later claimed he thought he was signing onto a role as a mere sideman but the contract tied him to Chalpin's PPX Records, a situation that became problematic once Chas Chandler signed Hendrix to a contract in 1966. Once Are You Experienced? became an international hit, Chalpin came calling to collect his share and this is where things got complicated. Lawsuits came down the pike yet Jimi kept heading back into the studio to jam with Knight, all the while claiming he was doing this while not under contract. Whether he was right or not would be a matter for the courts, but it did give Chalpin more music to peddle to other labels -- which he did, striking a deal with Capitol to release an album called Get That Feeling in December 1967 so it could capitalize on the sales of Are You Experienced?

Before Jimi Hendrix went to London to become a solo recording star, he had recorded some material with journeyman soul singer Curtis Knight and signed a contract with record executive Ed Chalpin. When Hendrix became an international superstar in 1967, this contract backfired on him badly, as Chalpin leased recordings of the Knight sessions to Capitol Records that did not in any way reflect what Hendrix had evolved into as a solo artist. Eight of these tracks were issued at the end of 1967 on Get That Feeling, which -- despite featuring only a picture of Hendrix, in all his 1967 glory, on the cover -- only features him as a guitarist session man, with Knight actually handling the vocals. It was not clear exactly when this material was recorded (there are no liner notes), but likely it dated from mid-'60s sessions shortly before Hendrix went solo, and/or jam sessions never intended for release. It was the beginning of contractual headaches for Hendrix and his managers vs. Chalpin that would last for the rest of Hendrix's life. Its controversy also helped ensure that in Hendrix histories, the music on the album itself is overlooked and rarely discussed in depth. It's actually listenable, although generic, 1960s soul/R&B/rock, with Hendrix playing well but much more conventionally than he did on his own recordings. You can hear hints of his full-blown psychedelic style, as on the wah-wah effects on "Hush Now," while "How Would You Feel" is an obvious rewrite of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." The recording quality and mix, even by 1967 standards, isn't that good, although it's not truly terrible. If this had only come out as a bootleg years after Hendrix's death, it would probably be considered an interesting artifact, if of somewhat limited appeal to most listeners. As an entry into Hendrix's legitimate discography, though, it has to be considered peripheral at best, exploitative and unrepresentative of his music at worst.

(a)           WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)            Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 8:1.

(d)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                                     THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-          Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-          Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-          Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-          Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-          Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-          Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a tiny (1x1")piece of transparent scotch tape

-          Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-          Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-          Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam
