London-formed trio the Jimi Hendrix Experience hit their second studio set with a tighter, jazzier tilt that shows Hendrix the songwriter keeping pace with Hendrix the guitarist. 'Spanish Castle Magic' snaps with coiled funk-rock momentum, Mitch Mitchell dancing around the pocket while Noel Redding locks the low end. 'Little Wing' distils a whole cosmos into two and a bit minutes, its Leslie-washed phrases and glockenspiel sparkle setting the template for tender psychedelia. 'If 6 Was 9' sprawls with foot-stomp percussion and free-thinking bite, a head-trip that still feels subversive. Flip to 'Castles Made of Sand' for bittersweet storytelling and backwards-guitar haze, then the finale 'Bold as Love' lifts off in a phased, sky-tearing solo that's become near-mythic. For all the studio trickery, what lingers is the balance: vivid songs, fearless sonics, and a band-UK-based but fronted by a Seattle firebrand-stretching rock's language without losing melody.
