Here is a SUPERB NM/Mint to Near Mint UK Track Records pressing of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's double album masterpiece, ELECTRIC LADYLAND (Track 613 008). We haven't seen a copy this clean in probably 20 years, and don't expect to see another one in that long. This copy has the second label variation, with "Two Record Set" printed on the labels (oddly enough, this is probably more scarce than the earlier version without this.) Prior to the advent of PopSike any black label Track "Electric Ladyland" was considered a first pressing and we consider this simply a variant. Both discs here are in stunning Mint to Near Mint condition, and have probably been played no more than 4 or 5 times, and very carefully at that. There are two or three small spindle marks on each label, but these are only noticeable when you are looking carefully for them--the labels all grade Near Mint. The Side A/Side D disc has stamper numbers A/1 and B/2; the Side B/Side C disc stampers are A/2 and B/2. The playing surface of each of the four sides is just beautiful, with no wear or sign of play. The discs sound incredible too--like they are brand new. And such great music. The Nude cover, unfortunately, eBay no longer permits us to picture. But it looks just great with top and bottom left corners and some extremely light and minor lamination creasing--but overall a strong Near Mint. (As you can see, the type here is white--but as we detail below, we feel the "blue type" variant is nothing more than the hype of a printing error.) At the bottom of the gatefold inside is the number 2657 001, which appears below the "Two Record Set" citation on the label (though the catalog number is, as on all Track pressings, 613 008.) A beautiful copy of an essential album that you'll never need to upgrade.

THE SCANS OF THE "BLUE TYPE" COPY BELOW ARE NOT THE COPY FOR SALE HERE, BUT PROVIDED FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. Now let's talk about the color of the type inside the gatefold. Since the advent of PopSike, sellers have been hyping those versions with blue type and larger photos of Noel and Mitch as "true first pressing"--a notion we find very dubious, for the a number of reasons. So for those of you who care, we've decided to use this space to explain why. When "Electric Ladyland" was released, Jimi Hendrix was a superstar in the UK and US. This album sold huge amounts from the outset, and yet, there are very few "blue type" copies. If these were indeed the first pressing copies of an album that was a bestseller on release, logic would dictate there would be far more "blue type" copies than the "white type" ones. Second, Recordmecca's Jeff Gold owns part of Jimi Hendrix's personal record collection, including his own copy of Electric Ladyland (sold at auction by his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham.) It's not much of a leap to assume that Jimi Hendrix's copy of his own album was a first pressing, yet Jimi's copy has the white type. Third, a careful examination of the "blue type" copies shows that they are actually the result of a printing error. If you check the scans we have provided below of a "blue type" copy, you'll see the blue type is actually made up of two shades of blue, a whitish-blue and a solid blue. This is the result of what's called a "stripping error." Without getting too technical, printing a full color image uses a process called "four color process printing" which creates a full color image by combining four different individual colored inks--cyan, magenta, yellow and black. To print a color album cover, four sheets of film (one for each color) are created using a process called "color separation." A sheet of paper is run through a press that prints cyan, magenta, yellow and black dots, all of which combine to simulate a full color image. When the color separation isn't done perfectly, you get a "stripping error" such as the streaky blue printing we see here. There is no way this would have been done intentionally, and when discovered, would surely have been corrected immediately (the different sized photos of Noel and Mitch could very well have resulted from such an error.) Jeff Gold, while creative director at A&M and Warner Bros. Records, art directed many album covers and has seen this kind of error before. We feel strongly that the "blue type" variant is nothing more than a printing mistake that, as we collectors see all too often, people have tried to turn into a highly desirable and important variation. OK, back to eBay. We grade all records visually, cover first, then disc; using the abbreviations M / NM / EX / VG with + and -. We try to describe everything as accurately as possible, and spot check any vinyl flaw that looks like it might make a sound. We regularly receive praise for our grading, but as all grading is subjective, we are happy to give a full refund for anything you aren’t happy with—no questions asked.
