UK FIRST PRESSING GRAINY BLACK LABEL TRACK MONO VINYL LP IN FRONT LAMINATED INNER FLIP-BACK SLEEVE. THERE IS NO POSTER INSERT OR ORIGINAL POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVE WITH THIS LISTING, AND IT IS THEREFORE PRICED ACCORDINGLY.
The front cover image is oriented 90-degrees right to spine and is laminated, with an unlaminated inside photo of the band. The inner part of the sleeve is a 'flipback' with 4 seperate glue-tabs, and is printed by Ernest J. Day & Co.
Much gibberish gets written about Hendrix 'mono' and 'stereo' releases, so we hope to clarify this as simply as possible. Hendrix was an American artist signed to a British record label [Track]. His early material was recorded and mastered in England, so the first generation masters were used in the UK for all original Track singles and the first three albums. Dubs of these masters were sent to the USA and released on Reprise Records. As was common in the mid-1960s (see the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, etc.) mono was the prefered mix for singles and albums. Very few people had stereos until the late 1960s and early 1970s in the UK. There was no stereo mix made for the UK of Are You Experienced until after the Mono was issued (this is a seperate story in and of itself). Both Are You Experienced AND Axis: Bold as Love were originally mixed in Mono, then a stereo mix was made of Axis. Oddly, the mono Axis mix is truer to the original stereo mix that was made of it before (Side A) was lost by Hendrix (he left it in a taxi cab and it was never found), than the quickly made stereo remix. The stereo mix of Axis is the same in the UK and the USA. The original Track label Axis mono mix was a bigger seller initially in the UK, and is slightly more common than the stereo mix. The first and, in our view, definitive pressing is the original mono Axis mix (the one on the copy that we are offering). It was replaced in the UK in 1970, when Track discontinued Axis and replaced it with the "Backtrack 11" re-issue. As far as we know, all subsequent UK & European re-releases contained this mix (if mono, most are stereo). Essentially, for 40+ years Europeans, and others, have had a different mix of Axis than North America & France!
This is a classic album, you'll be playing it for the rest of your life...so save yourself a lot of bother - just get an original A1/B1 UK Track label mono copy like this one and you will have yourself the album that Jimi heard and authorised when it was released and he was alive - everything else has been tampered with and messed around, especially digitally since the 1980s. Yuk. This album sounds awesome and punchy in the original mono - the stereo mix is 'different', and we don't think it as sonically rewarding as the mono, but you probably need to own a copy of both!

SLEEVE: VERY GOOD. BRIGHT AND SHINY COLOURS, NO WRITING OR DEFACEMENT. IT DOES HAVE SHELF, RING AND EDGE WEAR, CORNER BUMPS, A SMALL SCUFF TOP MIDDLE RIGHT. SPINE IS NOT FADED BUT DOES HAVE MINOR LAMINATE LIFT. THERE IS A ONE INCH TEAR REAR JUST BELOW HALFWAY WHERE THE DISC GOES IN. MINOR FLAP LIFT RIGHT TOP ON THE INSIDE AND MINOR CRINKLE EFFECT TO THE INNER PHOTO WHICH IS COMMON FOR THIS SLEEVE AS THE GLUE DRIED OUT ON THE 4 FLAPS. A DECENT, BUT NOT PERFECT SLEEVE.
DISC: VISUALLY VERY GOOD+ THAT PLAYS EXCELLENT MINUS. THERE ARE LIGHT HAIRLINES AND FINGERNAIL SCUFFS. THERE IS SOME SPINDLE WEAR. THERE ARE NO ACTUAL SCRATCHES. AURALLY THE DISC PLAYS AND SOUNDS SUPERB, NO SKIPS OR JUMPS, AND VERY LITTLE SURFACE NOISE, ONLY THE ODD POP OR STATIC TYPE CRACKLE. A VERY DECENT AND ENJOYABLE FIRST PRESSING PLAYING COPY WITH SOME MINOR DEFECTS AS STATED.
