Label/Format: Track – deep intense black surfaces with matt finish. One inner ring and a bevel near the rims. The surfaces appear to have a very gentle and fine surface texturing and look lovely. But they feel quite smooth to the fingertip.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Only very light spindle marks on side one, side two more moderate. All are incredibly fine and faint, also barely any go outside the small inner ring circle. This reitterates to me, the alignment on the platter was done with due care and using this tiny area for hole location. Their number I am certain being very deceptive as this record plays with SUPERB and VERY CLEAN sound throughout. Indeed one of the very best I have yet heard with hardly anything unwanted at all – the odd very faint tick apart. And how many ‘EXP’ opening tracks will not have the odd one or two as a bare minimum? Another beautiful record from the same source as the equally impressive ‘Are you Experienced’ I am currently offering.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity & Overview: Rare: and these days getting very rare indeed especially with the insert (often referred to as a ‘poster’). The stereo version, which I personally prefer (and not just saying that because I have one to offer) is rarer than the mono. The ‘Summer of Love’ was still very much the era for the mono record and outsold the stereo version by a significant degree. Early copies are often trashed beyond use, although this one has been (possibly) played a several of times, the playing surfaces are still clean and shiny and have minimal marks of which barely any sound at all. It offers very impressive clean, fully focused sound with a still very attractive cover and insert sheet. This classic album will not prove easy to find much better.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Always a pleasure to offer a rarer early stereo copy of this Hendrix treasure - the second of the three Experience classics - they are getting very hard to find at all now here in the UK, nice copies that play well are even more elusive. This album charted at 5 and 3 in the UK and US respectively, a hugely strong follow-up to the classic Are You Experienced, slightly less demonstrative of his guitar skills but proving himself as a formidable song writer, including several reflective compositions none better than the haunting ‘Little Wing’. Axis… always features high in any list of all times greats and justifiably so. How many times do you see this record offered, just to find its been played to destruction? This one plays beautifully with hardly anything unwanted, this also being played on a very revealing Linn LP12 Sondek which I play all my records on. Also I personally prefer the stereo mix, psychedelic rock always benefits from channel switching and separation for full effect – but that just a personal preference – the mono mix is equally essential. This complete and attractive example sets a high standard and many collectors will treasure it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a gatefold format with a laminated front and back. This ends inside the centre spread on four external flipbacks situated on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London. No text printed on this spine and this is a dual purpose mono and stereo cover. The Polydor inner is included and a very impressive original lyric insert ‘poster’ sheet.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: A little chipping on the bottom edge has been improved but only shows viewed end-on. Nothing else apparent.

Lamination – Front & Back: This is a cover that often suffers laminate issues, especially peeling and chipping of the edges. So glad to state this has largely been avoided with just a small chip on the front bottom edge that shows little, and tiny traces on the spine (look hard). The laminate retains fine shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting or peeling, that is somewhat unusual. Barely any dulling on the front and only a gentle trace of rim impression dulling seen under light on the back, almost as light as it really gets. Lovely to see the spine folds so intact without the usual large area of chipping and flaking, this makes a vast difference of course. Most of any creasing are fine edge types which are so hard to avoid, but hardly showing with normal full-on viewing. A few fine half moons on the back are almost lost in the glorious complex graphic. A few light marks, again seen under light, also as per most I have seen, some manufacture gripper marks near the top and bottom edges, here only light with modest visiblity. These run parallel around the cover and are purely natural, I worked for many years in the print trade and know these type of marks well enough. The only corner with a more significant seen rub is the back top left. One of the most visually stunning pieces of artwork ever put on to a rock album, and here seen to near maximum advantage, this has aged little and any blemishes small, light and mostly very minor. Not for the absolute perfectionist, but many will be proud to own this one.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is very impressive with little to fault. Being matt finished, a few light handling traces from the fingers is near impossible to avoid on a cover this substantial age. Crucially, those four flipbacks on the top and bottom edges are near immaculate with no wear, damage or even edge burring. No area has stuck and pulled and that in-itself is rare but the most welcome news. The man’s picture has an eerie presence and adds a real sense of awe to this classic cover – without doubt, one of the most charismatic centrespreads in rock history.

Top Edges: Both are very impressive neat and close flush. Just a chip to the back right corner tip, the laminate fully intact and still very smooth and unscuffed.

Bottom Edges: A couple of moderate chips on the front right on the very edge, and one much smaller, these have been tipped-in quite neatly and only show seen viewed end-on. That apart, largely as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is closed and has barely any outside chipping or wear. The back opening edge has hardly wear at all and remains sharp and crisp, again with no outside chipping. Any thickening or burring minimal and faint, the manufactured trim on the front not quite flush and no enhancements I feel sure.

Spine and Text: The spine is a crucial and critical area of this cover and very rarely does it escape laminate peeling, chipping and damage. This one is still very solid, straight with barely any compression. Folded square with little wear up to the corners that have only smallish rubs which so few will ever avoid at best. A couple of tiny surface chips but little else with practically all the graphic present and strong. This cover can be totally ruined by excessive wear on this fragile spine, so glad to state this one has faired well overall.

Corners: All corners have rubbed, the right ones only very small. More moderate on the spine with the odd tiny tip-in from the clearly scrupulous owner. Fine to very fine shape, some even better, shape retained.

Cover Summary: A lovely item, some blemishes or minor wear traces, yes, but nothing really serious and this will better probably the majority offered. This vintage cover is somewhat above average and importantly, if can be held and enjoyed with no ugly damages or excessive wear as I hope my pictures show. No for the perfectionists, will any ever really be these days? But knowing how badly this cover can and does wear, this will please many, and possibly even most collectors.

The Insert ‘Poster’: EXCELLENT(+): firstly, this is the genuine article, photocopies will be around and offered as the real thing - Beware!, but this item will never be easy to fake and fool anyone. Deep magenta text on a very deep orange background, but printing quality can vary with the text sometimes looking fuzzy. This one has text very clear, sharp and focused making the lyrics quite easy to read. It is a notorious fragile item that fades, tears and creases badly if not looked after properly. This example is unmounted, e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks and has minimal creasing. Just one small ‘rub’ mark towards the left that has NOT affect any text. In fact, after viewing under a magnifier, I am pretty sure this is a minor printing flaw. Large areas of single colour on a print plate can often show small areas of non-ink adhesion, in fact it is common. This remains fresh, attractive and the fold strong and unsplit. Even the back is still white with mimimal hints of any toning or discolouration. Made with thin paper, so a linttle fine crinkle traces are near impossible to avoid, but little detracts from this impressive and rare insert sheet.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a polylined Polydor style inner that is British patented. Only quite gently aged with the usual seam adhesive darkening. Two neat undamaged window circles and clear lining. Any creasing light and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy that has been (possibly) played a few times, but as stated, I am sure the spindle marks on side two are misleading. Records like this are seldom seen this clean with genuine lustre to the surfaces. Most of any marks are surface types and superficial of which there are few anyway. Even with scrutiny under bright angled light, there are minimal surface traces and clearly this record has more than faired well. It appears carefully handled mostly with due care and avoiding any disastrous arm drops or jolts. All this reflected with very impressive clean sound and visually this is a very impressive vintage record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic second Hendrix album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally carefully handled. A couple of faint ticks on ‘ESP’, probably the least I have heard in years as this opening track so often fairs badly being so quiet at the very beginning. Little else throughout and this impressive record will take a huge amount of beating. The stereo mix enhances the music better (in my opinion), the channel flipping and separation for this style of music works perfectly. A real joy to play-grade, I have heard few better and that is the honest truth. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the music and vocals all focused and clear. This will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
