·       Original, first pressing Track labels (such as the ones we have here) have a slightly different texture to the paper, but the single most important difference between the first and later Track/Polydor pressings is the catalogue number on the label: On the left side of the center hole, the catalogue number is repeated above the bold silver print in small printing, inverted in a bracket, i.e. upside down. In other words it can be read regardless of which way up you see the record. Those bracketed catalogue numbers end with a capital "A" or "B" per side, on both record's labels this is only found on the very first pressing (please see the image of the label, shown below, for illustration).

Following the first two Jimi Hendrix' albums, instantly acclaimed as classics, Electric Ladyland propelled Jimi Hendrix into the Olympian stratosphere (indeed, portions of the album sound as if they were recorded there). After this album, there was no doubt in anyone's mind: Jimi had absolutely no peers whatsoever and was the new Electric Guitar "God". He would remain one until this day. The album features an incredible cast of characters and supporting crew, some of whom are UNCREDITED. Al Kooper, Steve Winwood and Jefferson Airplane's Jack Cassady are known to have played on the sessions and are officially credited; Johnny Winter, Stephen Stills and Jim Morrison (whose murmuring and drunken rants can purportedly be heard in the background of "Voodoo Chile - slight return") are rumored to be among the guests. You be the judge.

Now for the main reason the first (“nude”) covers are so rare: in 1968 the Track label was only
one year old, Kit Lambert the co-founder and the Who's manager, was totally out of his head on
drugs (as was most of the music business back then). He and Stamp were keen to make sure the album got maximum publicity, Jimi and the Experience were now based in America, so they assumed the artwork was as planned. The nude ladies cover angered Jimi when he found out, but in the UK it outraged the press and let's not forget, the 60's UK's public were very prudish and moralistic towards anything likely to deprave the "easily corruptable" teenagers.

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye , Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). (a)            WE GRADE THE FIRST RECORD OF THIS 2-LP SET AS STRONG VG+(+), just a notch below NEAR MINT. On this record, some light abrasions ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact

(b)            WE GRADE THE SECOND RECORD AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible on this record, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(c)             The records come in hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which have - apparently with success - shielded the records from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)            The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)             Stock (commercially released) mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist (and it is questionable if they exist EVEN as promo pressings).

(f)              Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the bottom seam and minor wear on the top seam

-         The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 1 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 2 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).

-         Cover has two corners on the spine slightly worn / frayed / bent.

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease) in one of the corners (one on each side)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No yellowing from aging

-         No writing

-         No stamps

-         No peel-off marks

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
