Label/Format: Track – intense matt black finish. Interesting the two different spellings of Gipsies that vary on label to cover. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and quite attractive and very black indeed. Spindle marks are moderate in number and a little on the thick side, hence they do show more than some.

Cat Number: 2406 002.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A very good weight for this original first issue.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Quite Rare: only as a genuine first pressing and including the withdrawn ‘Puppet’ cover. This was not available for very long and when reissued, the cover was changed entirely making this one of the most sort-after Hendrix albums ever issued. The famous ‘Puppet’ cover is a much prized, cherished and collectable item from the legend that was Jimi Hendrix. Note on the back, the Hendrix doll is playing the guitar right-handed, many consider this the reason why this cover was actually pulled. A fragile item also, those that do surface are often in very poor, even badly damaged condition. Incredibly prone to price sticker pulls and severe damage from their removal, this is a trait more often seen than not. Clean copies with little to fault are genuinely rare and most are locked away in valuable collections and seldom seen or offered. This one has very modest traces of wear and is certainly one of the better ones I have seen.

Brief Info: Issued when Hendrix was still alive after he disbanded the ‘Experience’, this was the last album under his control and was a live set recorded at the Fillmore East, New York in 1970. The songs were all new. A great performance even if the sound is a little muted and a legendary album famed for its original cover. Known as the ‘Puppet’ cover, it features dolls of Hendrix, Brian Jones, Bob Dylan and DJ John Peel. It was withdrawn very quickly and replaced with totally different artwork, it has become one of the most sort-after covers in rock history and is hard to find in even respectable condition. Obviously the album that came with this sleeve were the true originals. The back hugely inaccurate with Hendrix playing right handed. This example has survived over forty years in super condition. The record clearly played a few times and it does have a little surface sound on the very quiet passages – this within the pressing – not really crackle, but a light and gentle surface sound like heard on the better picture discs. This a little surprising as Track, part of Polydor, are usually top quality pressings. Any sound is light and gentle, but present, so if this is an issue… .

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+, rarely even seen VG, this exceeds that by a distance and hs the potential to better most quite substantially.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: this is a matt finished unlaminated cover and a single format. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd. The surfaces are totally uncompromising for ringwear and sticker removal and back then, many were non-peelable making so many of these and similar covers vulnerable to pulling and major surface damage. I am delighted to say, this cover has no such traumas and still looks attractive.

Cover Front: Almost without doubt one of the most famous covers in the history of rock, one seldom seen or offered because of it’s very quick withdrawl from sale in the UK. This does not age well unless carefully looked after. The artwork on this front shows only very light friction rubbing and dulling under light with any marks or creases few and very faint. It retains strong colour and a high attractiveness factor with no sticker marks or surface ink removal. Certainly one of the best I have seen, the lack or ringwear is also a significant plus.

Cover Back: The somewhat inaccurate right-handed Hendrix doll looks superb and overall, this is pretty much the same as the front in all respects.

Top & Bottom Edges: The top has slightly less than moderate patchy rubbing. The bottom has a little above moderate rubbing which is consistent right the way across.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed, barely a burr or thickening trace at all. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Always vulnerable, this is in very fine condition. Solid, straight with just a little mildish compression. Quite lightly darkened with the really good news being the text is nigh-on all present with any wear minimal and tiny. Just two or three tiny clips to any letters, that is somewhat unusual on this one as many as found totally rubbed and eroded.

Corners: All corners have rubbed in context of their respective edge. That said, all retain fine shape.

Cover Summary: A much prized item, elusive and very collectable, and justifiably so. A strong all-round sleeve and with reasonably modest wear and no sticker flaws it will take a fair amount of beating. With most wear present on the top and bottom edges, not the areas that will be viewed as much as the main areas, this represents a highly respectable example. Not for the perfectionists of course, but many collectors will enjoy this fine example.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): this is the original Polydor-style lined inner that is date coded 1/0670. A little darkened with age to give clues of it’s considerable vintage. Two crisp and very neat window circles and clear lining with only light crinkle. All edges unsplit and very secure with barely any real creasing, some glue toning or darkening on the seams that few avoid. Overall, this original inner is in very fine condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: one mark at the end of ‘Who Knows’ with around a dozen or so mainly light clicks but any other marks are few and light and overall with no sound. A very pleasing visual example overall. A copy without played a few times, but mainly carefully and still a very fine, very early pressed visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Visually a strong record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare first pressed record plays well and up to, and most exceeding it’s visual grading with little fault. As stated, around a dozen mainly light clicks from the mark on the first song. Also a little very gentle surface sound (not crackle) on the utmost quite areas. This lies within the pressing and has nothing to do with groovewear or damage. All very gentle indeed and this too played on very revealing equipment. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is almost as good as it gets, but not the most outstanding in terms of dynamic range, but a more typical live album production for this period. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this enjoyable record. This copy will still prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Not for the audiophile or more discerning collector, but like the cover, many collectors will be more than happy, any doubts… .

End Piece: I am delighted to be able to offer this rare original album with the Puppet cover. With artwork of major historic significance and when they show up in such generally clean condition it’s a privilege. I have seen this in the past being offered in London in two times less grading condition than this one for huge prices – and I guess they sell. All proving just how rare any example is in higher grading conditions. Just look at my pictures, they do not lie, the main areas (front, back, opening edge and spine) are all in fine conditions. A real survivor and looking lovely – a genuine real opportunity – a timeless classic.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
