·       AMONG THE COLLECTORS, THE WORD OF MOUTH IS THAT THE MONO PRESSING OF THIS TITLE CAME ABOUT ONLY BECAUSE SEARS RETAIL CHAIN THREATENED NOT TO TAKE ANY MORE WARNER/REPRISE MERCHANDISE UNLESS THEY MAKE THIS PARTICULAR TITLE AVAILABLE TO THEIR CUSTOMERS IN BOTH STEREO AND MONO, AND THAT REPRISE RECORDS CAVED AFTER A BRIEF, TENSE STAND-OFF BETWEEN THE TWO PARTIES.  TO THIS SELLER, THE STORY DOES NOT MAKE SENSE ON ANY NUMBER OF LEVELS AND IS ALMOST CERTAINLY AN APOCRYPHAL LEGEND.  BASED ON THE APPEARANCE OF THE LABEL (GLOSSY, NOT FLAT), PRESENCE OF THE BILATERAL DEEP GROOVE (NOT FOUND ON OTHER "TRUE" REPRISE PERIOD PRESSINGS,  THE FORMAT ("MONO") PRINTED IN STRAIGHT (NOT CURVED) LINE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LABEL AND THE DISTINCT RCA-STYLED MACHINE STAMP ENDING WITH -1S/-1S ON BOTH SIDES, WE COMFORTABLY CONCLUDE THAT THIS IS AN RCA VICTOR CUSTOM PRESSING, AND IT IS ALL BUT CERTAIN THAT ALL STOCK U.S. MONO PRESSINGS (NOTWITHSTANDING THE MONO WHITE LABEL PROMOS) ARE STRICTLY RCA VICTOR'S. WHETHER THE MONO PRESSINGS WERE PRODUCED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE RCA'S RECORD CLUB (THERE IS NO INDICATION OF IT ANYWHERE ON THE ALBUM) OR WERE SIMPLY CONTRACTED TO THE RCA CUSTOM PRESSING SERVICE AFTER THE REPRISE HAD ALREADY TRANSITIONED TO THE 2-TONE LABEL AND AWAY FROM MONO FORMAT (ALONG WITH THEIR OTHER PRESSING VENDORS), WE WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE, BUT WE SUSPECT THE LATTER. SO RARE ARE THE STOCK COPIES OF THIS ALBUM THAT THEY EVEN OUTNUMBER WHITE LABEL PROMOS AT A RATIO OF AT LEAST 10:1, A TRULY UNPRECEDENTED SITUATION IN THE RECORD-COLLECTING HOBBY.

·       THE RAREST COMMERCIALLY RELEASED AMERICAN JIMI HENDRIX LP OF THEM ALL. FROM THE STANDPOINT OF TRUE RARITY, THIS MAKES THE UK MONO AXIS LOOK LIKE A COMMON, EVERY DAY, NO-BIG-DEAL BUNCH OF NOTHING. INTERESTINGLY, THE U.S. MONO US PRESSING DID NOT COME OUT CONCURRENTLY WITH THE STEREO PRESSING IN 1967. THERE ARE NO AMERICAN 'TRI-COLOR RIVERBOAT' LABEL MONO COPIES. FOR WHATEVER REASON WAS CONTEMPORANEOUS WITH THE 2-TONE "ARE YOU EXPERIENCED" AND THE FIRST PRESSINGS OF "ELECTRIC LADYLAND". WHY THIS IS SO IS ANYONE'S GUESS, BUT BECAUSE OF THAT IT WAS ALMOST NON-EXISTENT EVEN IN IT'S DAY, SINCE MONO HAD ALREADY GONE OUT THE WINDOW IN AMERICA BEGINNING IN LATE 1967 AND EARLY 1968.

·       ABOUT THE MIXES: THIS IS DEFINITELY A DEDICATED MONO MIX, SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE STEREO MIX. THE ISSUE OF PREFERENCE IS HIGHLY INDIVIDUAL: MOST COLLECTORS SEEM TO PREFER STEREO TO MONO (PSYCHEDELIC STEREO EFFECTS AND STEREO PANNING ARE ENTIRELY ABSENT ON THE MONO MIX), AND EDDIE KRAMER HIMSELF QUESTIONED SOME OF HIS OWN MONO MIX DECISIONS. HOWEVER, MONO MIX IS DECIDEDLY MORE "RAW" AND ENERGETIC AND REVEALS MUCH, MUCH MORE OF THE RHYTHM SECTION, NOEL REDDING'S BASS LINES (AND JIMI'S VOCALS) IN PARTICULAR. IN SHORT, THE TWO FORMATS ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND INCOMPATIBLE LISTENING EXPERIENCE AND SHOULD NOT BE COMPARED TO EACH OTHER. ALL ISSUES (WHETHER STEREO OR MONO) HAVE A SECOND A-SIDE MIX, AFTER THE ORIGINAL A-SIDE MASTER WAS LOST. 'EXP' IS LOT SHORTER IN MONO MIX THAN IN STEREO

Jimi Hendrix's second album followed up his groundbreaking debut effort with a solid collection of great tunes and great interactive playing between himself, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, and the recording studio itself. Wisely retaining manager Chas Chandler to produce the album and Eddie Kramer as engineer, Hendrix stretched further musically than on the first album, but even more so as a songwriter. He was still quite capable of coming up with spacy rockers like "You Got Me Floating," "Up from the Skies," and "Little Miss Lover," radio-ready to follow on the commercial heels of "Foxey Lady" and "Purple Haze." But the beautiful, wistful ballads "Little Wing," "Castles Made of Sand," "One Rainy Wish," and the title track set closer show remarkable growth and depth as a tunesmith, harnessing Curtis Mayfield soul guitar to Dylanesque lyrical imagery and Fuzz Face hyperactivity to produce yet another side to his grand psychedelic musical vision. These are tempered with Jimi's most avant-garde tracks yet, "EXP" and the proto-fusion jazz blowout of "If 6 Was 9."

The historical importance of this album cannot be overestimated. Recorded almost immediately after the Hendrix's first album, "Axis" finds Jimi elaborating on his ideas previously experimented on "Are you experienced", but with much more subtlety and finesse and considerably more pronounced psychedelic "feel" (just check the cover and be instantly experienced!). (a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 2 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           (ORIGINAL) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 1000: 1.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.   Inside gatefold has some light ring wear as well

-        The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant) ; Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-        Inside gatefold has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

-        Cover has all four corners slightly worn/dinged (nothing significant)

-        The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 1 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).

-        Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.
