Jim Jackson was born in Hernando, Mississippi and was working as a singer, dancer, and musician by 1905, when he was 19 years old. He played in medicine shows, playing dances and parties and soon began travelling with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels, featuring Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, and other minstrel shows.
He also played clubs on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. His popularity and proficiency secured him a residency at Memphis's prestigious Peabody Hotel in 1919. Like Leadbelly, Jackson knew hundreds of songs including blues, ballads, vaudeville numbers, and traditional tunes, and became a popular attraction.
In 1927, a Vocalion talent scout signed him to a recording contract and he recorded "Jim Jackson's Kansas City Blues", which became a best-seller. It wasn’t long before he was lured away to Victor Records and in January of 1928 started a long string of record for them as well. At the same time, he was doing double duty as a talent scout for Brunswick Records, and it’s said that he was the guy who discovered Rufus "Speckled Red" Perryman, gaining him his first recording session.
This record comes from a pair of sessions in 1928. The topside here is “I’m Wild About My Lovin’” and is from a session on August 27. If it sounds familiar, that might be because it was covered by The Lovin' Spoonful and released on their first "best of" album in 1967. The flipside song “Going ‘Round The Mountain” is from a session on September 4.
